The desert was one of the major highlights of and inspirations for our March 2022 trip to Morocco. Our tour company, Morocco Key Travel, set up the camel ride with Hamad and had our luxury camp accommodations waiting after the ride. We left the rocky start of the desert at mid-day and arrived at the camp just before full sunset. The desert was gloriously calm and quiet, just stunning. And I'm a rivers gal! Our guide had the perfect place to stop for photos and was a great sport. He hobbled our camels when he took group photos of us, and the lead camel led the others away to chew at grass. We got to keep the blue scarves given to us and had help tying them before getting on the camels. The camel kneels down, you climb onboard, and hold on as it stands up again. It's a lot higher than a horse, but the gait is similar, but no direction is needed from the rider. Just rock along and enjoy. At our campsite, we got to do some sandsurfing on a shorter dune. For my stay in Merzouga I asked Said from Bestmoroccantours to assist me in planning an itinerary. He provided a flexible itinerary full of incredible activities to do at Merzouga. It included visiting some local landmarks and attractions.. as well as camel riding, 4WDing and quad biking in the Sahara Desert. Said thinks of everything, and nothing is too much of a hassle. Everything was so easy with pick up and drop off included. Said even went above and beyond by organising a takeaway dinner for me for the night I left Merzouga. Came into contact with Hamid through one of his many satisfied former customers, and I can now see why they would be. Being a desert guy, from Morocco's indigenous Amazigh ethnic group, it was like: "hey man, relax, I've got you covered, I know my dunes". The beauty in it was, quite casually, also taking in bits and pieces of the inside story alongside the more usual touristic descriptions, as if going along with an old-time, well-informed and well-connected friend I had met up with. I got a feel that beyond the major country landmarks I visited in Marrakesh and beyond I also enjoyed a few experiences any Moroccan might go for. That gave my visit an overall authentic feel. Would definitely repeat with him next time I go that way, especially to experience Saharan Morocco, which must, understandably, be his forte. See more..

Such a great company! I found this company on trip advisor the day we arrived in Erfoud, hoping there would be availability for the following day (totally last minute). Mohammed was so quick to respond via email and then WhatsApp to help set up a 4x4 for the following morning sunrise. The driver was really great and drove us as close as possible to the dunes and then we walked up to the peaks. There was also the option to rent a camel for the ride up but we are animal lovers and try to avoid tours like that-I liked that they didn't pressure us into taking the camel. My favorite part of the trip was probably the camel ride into the desert but having Hassan Ouhaddou as our tour guide was the highlight. I took my son with me to celebrate his completion of his GCSEs, we trekked together with Moha from Marrakech into the High Atlas and then to the desert returning via Ourzazete. Moha knows so much, we learnt lots - 600 million years ago the Sahara was a sea and the rocks today clearly display fossils of jelly fish and squid just by pouring water on them, sunsets in the desert are truly amazing as is the desert night sky where shooting stars are the norm. We sang and played drums with the Berbers and listened to their ancient tales of magic and adventure. All the places we stayed in were clean and comfortable. The panaromic view from the hotel in Dades is spectacukar as was staying overnight in the Berber camp where it's more glamping than camping - each tent has a toilet and shower. Fascinating insight into many aspects of Berber life, architecture, etc. The kindly manager saw us entering the reception area, and straight away dragged our teenagers to the swimming pool, so they could swim (free of charge) in the hotel pool while we explored the museum at our ease. This experience was excellent- a trip out to see the otherworldly land art of Hannsjörg Voth, located out in the middle of nowhere and only accessible by 4x4. I was the only tourist there when I went, which really added to the strange quiet power of the place, with its high towers that look like ancient buildings and a staircase that leads to the sky- it's impossible to take a bad photo of it! On top of that I got to stop by one of the ancient underground irrigation wells, an equally surreal and magical space. Definitely recommend it. See more..
