Things to do & places to visit in Lazio, Italy

Lazio cover image
Lying at Italy’s geographic and historic heart, Lazio (or Latium) was the seat of the Roman Empire, and as such is teeming with ancient attractions, especially in the Eternal City of Rome itself. To the east, Tivoli has Emperor Hadrian’s exquisite and massive Villa Adriana. Civitavecchia, today a major cruise and ferry port, has been Rome’s main harbor since the second century. Many pre-Roman sites dot Lazio too, like the Etruscan necropolis at Cerveteri, dating from the 9th century BC.

Lazio #1 destination in Italy 2023. The average rating score is 4.51 based on 835.3k traveler reviews, of 214 attractions. Timezone: Europe/Rome, current date and time: Monday, May 06, 2024, 17:20.

This was a great experience--a chance to see and learn so much Roman history, off the beaten path. Our guide customized or tour to our group's pace and our interests. The route, though it went through some of the city/suburbs, felt safe. We biked over 17 miles, covering many historical sites and beautiful green space, but it all felt achievable with a little electric boost. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants an active, hands-on experience in Rome. See more..

The visit costs 8€ per person and is totally worth it. You will have some cardio walking the steps but it is quite rewarding. In some parts I had walk tilted because the angle of the hall was designed like that. You'll end up in a cage on top of the Rome with beautiful views on all surrounding parts of town, the pictures from there are amazing. I recommend visiting this place during part of first day to see what catches your eye. See more..
  6. 5.0 Rome Guides (2.084 reviews)
    - Private tour of Palatine Hill, Forum and Coliseum with Martina
    Walking Tours • Private Tours
    Rome Guides image
Martina was an excellent guide, she had SO much knowledge and excellent story sharing. She kept us extremely engaged for 3 hours and it flew by even in the extreme temperatures in Rome (95 degrees). It was 4 of us, myself, my husband and our 23 & 19 year old. We started in the Palatine Hill, moved through the forum and did the coliseum last. We had done a group tour a few years before but that tour didn’t compare to this. I highly recommend a private tour; it will not be any more expensive and you will get undivided attention and a much better experience. At the end we felt like we were saying goodbye to a family member. Martina hugged us all and even offered suggestions of things to do the next day and restaurants which were wonderful suggestions! My only regret is I wish we had gotten a photo with her. Thanks Martina!!! See more..

We drove up to the peak opposite the city. We parked nearby with paid parking (not expensive), however, I would expect issues in peak times. If you like, you can sit and have a drink and get plenty of great photographs of the bridge, the outpost of a city and the valley around. Otherwise, you can walk down, across the bridge and wander around the town. Allow plenty of time to do this - BEWARE! See more..
