A temple that underlines the engineering skills of EME people. The aluminium canopy makes any whisper inside the temple audible clearly everywhere in the temple. Even more surprising was the wealth of old statues excavated during many of EME projects. The collection spans many centuries from perhaps 5th to 12 century being the most part of the collection. - 4.5 Somnath Temple (436 reviews)
-Original Somnath Mandir
Religious Sites
This is the Original Somnath Mandir renovated by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar in 1783 Thus more than 250 years old. The Bigger temple has been reconstructed in 1951 and thus 72 years old. There are no restrictions on visitors in this temple. You may carry mobile camera for taking pics. You are allowed to perform Abhishek, touch and pray to this oldest Somnath Jyotirlinga. We ofcourse did Abhishek and spent lot of time praying in front of this Jyotirlinga. There is bust of Rani Ahilyabai in front of temple mentioning year of renovation. Rani Laxmibai claimed her legacy as Kshatriya Dhangar ( Gujjar) caste. But the temple trust publically advertises Brahmanbhoj and fees or charges unfortunately disregarding her own Gujjar community . This board is unfortunate legacy of unequal hierarchy of exploitative caste system. I wish our Non Brahmin Prime Minister should enforce economically deprived bhoj daan in all temples now that even Supreme Court has recognised inequality on EWS! See more..
