There's a local saying that one cannot say to have been to Wutaishan for pilgrimage if one does not visit Dailuo Ding. Situated on top of one of the peaks - it has a good view of the Tayuan Monastery and the valley below. There's gondola lifts up to the peak. Pilgrims make a 45mins walk up. Some even prostrate every 3 steps up. Main shrine is dedicated to the Five Manjushris of the five Wutai peaks.See more..

4.5Guan Di Miao(16 reviews) - Well maintain original temple devoted to Guan Di, the God of War Wednesday: 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM Religious Sites
Guan Di was a general who was elevated in Taoist and Buddhist religions as the God of War. You see temples with this god throughout Asia and even in the U.S. His image can be found in most police stations in Taiwan and he is revered by businessmen. The grounds are well maintained and the temple grounds are well worth the visit if you find yourself in Yuncheng, China.See more..

4.0Lin fen Yao Temple(15 reviews) - Very nice Wednesday: 6:30 AM - 8:00 PM Ancient Ruins
I have visited this site twice since moving to China. I have to say that this temple is beautiful. There is many things to see in the area including a very large drum and bell. If you want to you can pay a small fee of 1 to 12 RMB to ring the bell and hit the drum. Its considered good luck to do so. Though I have been twice I have to say my favorite time to visit is in the winter when it is covered in snow. It takes on a whole new look when you visit during the winter, plus there are not that many people there because its cold. If you are lucky you can visit the fair they have outside the gates of the temple. It there that you can buy gifts for people. Don't be surprised if people look at you and ask for photos. As a forgiener in the area you will probably one of the first they have seen in real life. So just smile and go with it.See more..

4.5Datong Museum(12 reviews) - Well Done Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Natural History Museums
The Museum, as Museums go, is quite excellent. They have many pieces from different periods and peoples of Northern China, including weapons, money, pottery, and Dinosaurs. While we were there, they also had an exhibition of African art and masks, again, it is well done. Most pieces had an English title, but no in-depth description in English. Not really a place for little kids, unless you want to get them through the dinosaurs, the other stuff may bore them. No issue recommending this place for those that enjoy history.See more..

4.5Xian Tong Temple(11 reviews) - Appropriated Temple Spent More than 3 hours Religious Sites
The white Stupa in front of the temple was originally part of Xian Tong Temple. But during the Ming Dynasty it was appropriated by the emperor to give credit to his mother so that she would have a better after-life. So the new temple beside is called Tayuan Temple. The Bell Tower was also cut out from the main compound of the temple and you have to enter Xian Tong Temple sideways. Anyway the emperor always get what he wants. The amazing feature of the temple would be the Guilded Bronze Hall. Striking in the sun.See more..
4.0Chongshan Monastery(11 reviews) - A Little Piece of History Religious Sites
I visited Chongshan Monastery after visiting Shuangta Si. (It is about a 15 minute drive between the two). It is very small and takes about 5 minutes to see everything, but it is pleasant to see the monks lounging under the trees and playing with dogs. The temple itself has a dark, ancient air and is still used by locals and students praying for exam results. This temple is only 1/40th of its original size. It is a pity to think more of this could have been here to make it a more noteworthy attraction. Even the old houses around the temple were being demolished during my visit creating dust and traffic entry problems. I didn't see any beggars, maybe they were off for lunch, but I had my fair share of them in Shanxi province elsewhere. Note the 2 Yuan entrance fee which will be asked for by one of the monks.See more..
This impressive red drum tower, located in the middle of a busy roundabout in central Linfen, is the second tallest drum tower in China. (At 43.75 meters tall, it is just a bit shorter than the one in Beijing.) Also known as Dazhonglou, this magnificent square tower was built in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The structure has been damaged by several major earthquakes and has been rebuilt a number of times. The foundation is original, but the main wooden structure was completely rebuilt (to the earlier design) in 1984 after having been damaged in 1948 during the Chinese Revolution. This drum tower is supported by 12 massive wooden pillars, each one meter in diameter. The building contains no nails and is held together by a series of interlocking wooden pieces. The tower is several floors tall, and visitors are permitted to climb to the top, where they can enjoy a nice view out over the city, including of the eight-sized pagoda at Dayun Temple nearby. The drum on display on the lower floor is not the original one, but the bell on display in some 800 years old.Location: The Linfen Drum Tower (Dazhonglou) is located on Gulou Xi Dajie in central Linfen.See more..

4.0Wuyi Square(10 reviews) - The square is fascinating and there are lots of very friendly people hanging out there. Points of Interest & Landmarks
It is almost impossible to miss this square, if you're in Taiyuan City. It is the landmark that I always use for taxi drivers. If you are a foreigner, like me, people will stop to chat to you. 4.0Tianlong Mountain(10 reviews) - Fresh air and a nice hike Mountains
I went to Tianlong Mountain in December, which was perfect because there were hardly any people there. The air is much cleaner up in the mountains, and we got lucky because it was a really sunny, windless winter day. Side note: Bring some food and drinks. I didn't see anything to buy, when I was there. There are plenty of little spots to have a nice picnic! Seeing the old Chinese buildings and the Buddhist shrines was really cool. Also, the caves in the mountains, that seemed to have been carved out so long ago for statues and worship, were really impressive. My negatives: The whole place is heavily under camera surveillance, which I found strange. It also made me a little uncomfortable, but it didn't stop me from climbing up into one of the caves to meditate in complete silence for as long as I wanted. The reason I gave Tianlong Mountain four stars is because of the giant (and I mean massive) pile of garbage I found in landslide form just off the path, on the side of the mountain. This was both disgusting and disappointing. Overall, I really enjoyed this place. It's perfect for a full day of exercise. I think it's a top attraction in Taiyuan.See more..
4.0Lijia Old Village(9 reviews) - Get there quick! Mountains • Caverns & Caves
Li Family Mountain (Lijiashan) is small village on the side of hill alongside the Yellow River in Shanxi Province. The closest town is Qikou. The village is one of the better preserved examples of traditional cave houses that are built into the hillsides (called yaodong in Mandarin)). This place is getting ready to explode, not with the foreign crowd but with the domestic audience. A new five-star resort has just broken ground and a new highway is inching its way toward this out-of-the-way location. You will stay in a genuine cave house and the owners will cook for you, all included in the room price. But get here quick, before it's overrun.See more..
4.5Yanmenguan Pass(9 reviews) - Remote Chinese style Castle Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 7:30 PM Architectural Buildings
Yanmenguan Pass is the location of one of the most important fortresses in the Great Wall of China. Surounded by tall mountans peks and accessible only by an ancient road which works its way between the cliffs, this pass was the logical invasion point for foreigners (especially Mongolians) looking to pour into China. Over a 2000 year period, over 130 major battles took place at this strategically important mountain bottleneck. This sight is usually listed near Wutai Shan, which you already cover. As with the other applications, I'm happy to promptly provide a good description if this is accepted as a new sight by TripAdvisor. Thanks for your kind consideration of all of these requests. Shanxi is one of the most history-laden provinces in China, and I'd like to help you cover it better. ShanxiFan / Heather.See more..
4.5Changping Guandi Temple(9 reviews) - The temple is like a palace Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites

4.5Shengmu Hall(9 reviews) - Must go visit the Sacred Mother Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
As this place has great historical significance, it is a mandatory place to go if you are a tourist. Get a good guide to explain this place to you otherwise it would just be an old temple with faded paint and a slanted tree. This temple turned into one for the Sacred Mother of Tang Shuyu because the Song emperor did not one a great leader to arise from here to defeat his dynasty as happened before. So in the aftermath of an earthquake, he used the excuse to change the temple as well as the surrounding Fengshui. It was a successful undertaking as no more great leader came from this place.See more..
4.0Taiyuan Chunyang Hall(9 reviews) - The old Shanxi Museum Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
Honestly, the architecture and the collection are marvellous. It really worths 30 yuan entry fee to hang about for more than 2 hours as there are bronze ware, ceramics, wall painting, status, you name it. However, with the new museum well designed without entry fee, this Taoist temple is like a relic hidden in a busy city. There is only simple illustration to a beautiful ware dating back to Tang dynasty and there is no official guide or souvaniour at all. It is really sad to see heritages left as this.See more..

4.5Guangsheng Temple(6 reviews) - What an historic beauty Wednesday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Religious Sites
Guangsheng Temple is a magnificent Buddhist temple built in south-central Shanxi Province in the year 147. The highlight of the temple is the spectacular Feihong Pagoda, the largest and best preserved glazed pagoda in China. Octagonal in shape and nearly 500 years od, this 13-storey pagoda really glimmers on sunny days. This temple has many other fantastic elements and could be a UNESCO World Heritage Site one day. 4.5Yungang Forest Park(6 reviews) - 青翠欲滴,郁郁葱葱 Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Amusement & Theme Parks
Super, beautiful, tranquil temple. Lovely construction and details on the inside walls of each section. We went toward evening time as it was closing and the monks were emerging to walk around the courtyard (3 times clockwise I believe is the tradition). Some unique gems as well. As the ladies were closing up the library at the very back of the temple, they invited us in to show us a phenomenal art work; they explained to my Chinese colleague that a famous book (I believe it was found under the base of the unique central tower, but I may have misunderstood) has been transcribed onto a huge fabric or paper in the shape of a Chinese temple - you have to see it to believe it. It took a 40 y/o monk 3 years and the whole thing is written in his own blood! I found the whole place captivating.See more..

4.5Wanfoge Temple(5 reviews) - Wuye Temple or "Five Uncle" Temple Religious Sites
The rough story goes something like this. This region faces drought frequently and the people suffered. So one day, Manjusri went to borrow a "cool stone" from the Dragon King to cool this region and bring rain. The Dragon King was unhappy and lost his cool. Then his Five Dragon Princes came here to retrieve the cool stone but were placated by the Manjusri Bodhisattva. So this temple is a place now where many people come to pray for rain and for their wishes to come true. Because of his ability to grant wishes, this temple is the most popular temple in Wutai. May 13 (Lunar) is the birthday of Wuye and is said to be the date where your dreams declared to Wuye are most likely to come true. While the entrance to the temple is free, if you wish to pray, you have to pay a high price for the incense. (RMB 100, 200, 300 etc) candles, etc. There are also many privateer that will accost you when you try to pray. They will assist you to light your incense and teach you to pray in the four directions. They will then ask for a very high service fee like RMB 300-1000. I tried to pay him RMB50 but we settled for RMB100. In other parts of Asia, such a temple (with such services) would typically be considered a Taoist Temple but here it is combined with Buddhist Gods and the chinese here has consummate skills in commercialising both Gods and Buddhas. If your wish were to come true, then you are required to return to the Temple within 3 years to offer your thanks. At this temple, and other temples, you can find offerings and donations from people (typically HongKies) whose wishes have been granted by the Five Dragon Prince (Wuye). May you have a fruitful trip here and experience the power of Wuye.See more..
