Mind-boggling step farming
Dazhai village can be reached by bus from Yangshuo or Guilin railway station. It is a beautiful place, which is fast transforming from a natural beauty to a mere business spot. Starting from the very moment you get down from the bus, chosen village women with traditional long hair and ethnic dresses will bug you to buy stuffs or attend shows. Most of the villagers have transformed their homes into little cottage-style hotels, which are cheap and serving meals. We preferred to chose one quite high up in the mountain, the stone racked stairs being rocky and slippery in the rain and mist. There was not much to expect from the room, except a small bed which let two of us have a good nap in the afternoon, before heading to climb the mountain top. It was about an hour long climb, where the real beauty of the farms is portrayed. Dont expect the photoshop-ed scenes that you have seen in the internet before coming here, but its still worth a visit. It was truly amazing, how scientific and beautiful farming can be in mountainous terrain. The mountain top has typical stores , where you can buy local stuffs, handicrafts, or take pictures in ethnic dresses. I recommend Dazhai to others if they have spare time in their scheduled trip.
