Evening visit

Super, beautiful, tranquil temple. Lovely construction and details on the inside walls of each section. We went toward evening time as it was closing and the monks were emerging to walk around the courtyard (3 times clockwise I believe is the tradition). Some unique gems as well. As the ladies were closing up the library at the very back of the temple, they invited us in to show us a phenomenal art work; they explained to my Chinese colleague that a famous book (I believe it was found under the base of the unique central tower, but I may have misunderstood) has been transcribed onto a huge fabric or paper in the shape of a Chinese temple - you have to see it to believe it. It took a 40 y/o monk 3 years and the whole thing is written in his own blood! I found the whole place captivating.

    Scripture in Blood
I believed, the Fahua Temple, is not frequented by tourists. If you do go, must go to the last hall at the back. It stores the works of the current abbot. Speak with the guardians there about the works by the current abbot of the temple. They showed me a piece of work - about 5 m long, the scripture written by the abbot using his blood in the shape of a pagoda. The words were so perfect I thought they were printed. This piece was covered up. So guess, you have to ask to see it. The guardians there decided to show me because I was the only one there. Guess no visitors. Excellent work.

    Deserve a short visit
Pagoda was built to preserve the ash of important monks in the white Pagoda in central yard. The entrance gate is beautiful with colored tile. The entrance yard is small with Drum and Bell towers. If you had enough time in Datong to visit this place, take a short visit of the yards and spend more time in the last yards museum of paintings and calligraphy by the famous live monk of the temple.
