Spent two days here with my colleagues. This amazingly well preserved Qing city is a visual spectacle. From the city walls you can see the order behind the apparent chaos as walking through it is easy to lose yourself. Dozens of museums, hundreds of historic buildings and years of history unfold before your eyes. At night red lanterns illuminate everything with a gentle glow. Stay in a boutique courtyard hotel, enjoy the local food, sample the locally produced drinking vinegar, shop till you drop and finish the day off at a bar. This place has it all. This 9,000 square metre, private residential compound was constructed in the last half of the 18th century. It has 313 room and 25 courtyards of varying sizes. The courtyards include a grand courtyard, five other large, and 19 smaller ones. Its most famous resident was Qiao Zhiyong (1818 to 1907), a famous Chinese financier of the 19th century. The Qing dynasty architecture, wooden carvings, brick and stone carvings, and many other features are spectacular. The compound is sometimes used in movie sets. I visit Datong city wall November 2020 and it was very pleasant experience. Basically just me and my friend there. No rush no crowd just enjoyable wandring around wall. City wall itself is well rebuild and top of it can see old datong as well as new part of Datong. Rent bike is also available and recommed if want to see whole wall. See more..

This ancient castle was just fascinating. My wife and I were guided through the tunnels by our guide from Pingyao. We learned a lot about life in a Castle 1300 years ago. This was a military compound when first built and then became a place for local folk. There were 10000 meters of tunnels built under the castle. Now 1500 meters are open to the public. We came down from Datong and our driver stopped short of the pass and stopped and showed us a section of earth wall. It is unrestored and free. It is easy to walk bits of it and you really can imagine the hordes coming down here. Well worth a visit. The pass itself is rebuilt and quite interesting, but no feeling of history for me. wetook the train to there and just 10 minutes walk from train staition and entrancee ticket is cheap and new builted river is nice and the boat can bring you to another side of this area and you can see many beaufiful waters and waterfall there but the most impressive is " shui shang ren jia " there is one spring cross one house and there is a 80 years old date tree there what's more this house also offer the food ,cheap but quite delicious it seems many things of area need to repair or build new things even the tempel if more invetment, maybe will be better and can attract more visitors See more..

地方不算大，进去之后就有阴森感看着那口小井上布满了绳子的勒痕便会想到当时的犯人每天都要在这挑水，比较出名的就是八丈墙，顾名思义就是墙高八尺不同的是里面灌注了流沙防止死囚越狱，总体来说此景点还算可以。 See more..

Must-visit for people interested in history and culture to see remaining unrestored sections of the Great Wall and China’s largest fort cluster (see picture). The original layout contained two forts, a wool and horse market, tax office, temples etc. You can still see the 得胜堡 (Deshengbao) fort, 德胜口 (Deshengkou) gate to Inner Mongolia and remaining parts of the wall of the Datong section around 1km beyond 得胜堡village. I came here with my daughter to pray for happiness and health for the family. Very old temple with seven small prayer halls. Each hall is filled with giant buddas. Entry fee is $ 25 yuen, and I brought insance from outside the temple cause it's cheaper. One of the best perserved temple I have been to, consider it's from the Tong Dynesty. The objective for coming to this place for some chinese is to search for their ancestral roots. During the early Ming Dynasty, many people died as a result of war and natural disasters. However, Shanxi province was still heavily populated. Ministers proposed to the emperor (Zhu Yuanzhang) to forcibly transfer part of the population from Shanxi to the outlying provinces. The place "Da Huai Shu" (Locust Tree or Pagoda Tree) was the place where the registration was carried out and the people dispatched from here. There was a legend that people who do not wish to be sent off must come here to be registered. But when they arrived here they are arrested and tied up to be sent off. The toilets here are called "Jie Fang Shi" (Untie Room) because during that time, they were all tied up to prevent them from escaping. Families were split up in the process and sent to different places. It was a tragic and draconian policy. This place is also a major con job as they think of innovative ways to help you part with your money, so be careful. See more..

早上9:00点，我们开车从“西门咖啡旅宿”出发，沿着门前的御河西路一路北上，约莫40分钟才到达镇边堡，在堡里转了一圈，堡不大，但是整个堡内都是住户，老人居多，坐在大街上聊天晒太阳，堡内正在修路，徒步更好。从堡西门下来，穿过万泉河，开车上了对面的西寺村，小村子经过了统一规划，院子一模一样，如果绿化更好一些，以后风景也是不错的。新修的旅游专业刚到村前，去永固陵的路断掉了，开车不方便，我们过段沿着新路往东开，去我们的目的地：镇边堡。长城本身就是从西寺村背后的山上延伸下来，旅游专线沿着长城平行向东。沿途很多杨树，深秋的黄叶看起来色彩斑斓，配上长城着实好看。
沿山上下来，到镇川口村时，我们选择徒步一段距离，沿着长城步行约1小时。长城以北属于内蒙，长城以南属于山西，长城两侧都是农田和零星的村庄，农田了有着忙碌的身影，掰玉米、犁地、刨红薯和土豆，看着新鲜的土豆，我们忍不住买了一袋，5毛钱一斤，一袋33块钱。到中午12点多我们到了镇边堡，这边的老房子大多拆掉了，正在改造成新农村，主干街设计成仿古的样子。一条街也就300米长，开门的也就便利店和一家饭店，饭店紧挨着戏台，去的有点晚，米饭没有了。老板建议烩菜馒头，12元1个人，管饱。朋友没有吃过黄糕，老板真好有现蒸的，要了3块。（黄糕是用黍米做的，粘性的，不能细嚼，一般都是一小块一小块直接咽下去，口感偏苦，不太容易消化。建议大家尝尝就行）烩菜很不错，估计因为都是自己地里种的菜，吃着像小时候的味道，很不错。推荐大家去这家店，紧挨着戏台，名字忘记了。饭后我们之间驱车回到市区。 See more..
