More correctly INSIDE the Datong wall....!!!
The Old Datong township has a lovely wall around it - all re-constructed to be like new, but you'd swear it's 2000 years old. It's therefore possible to walk around the Old Town - which itself is being "restored". Beside the West Gate ??( please, please check ) there is a fantastic large modern gallery space built within the wall. I was lucky enough to be there for the Datong Biennial and saw some of the best sculpture I've seen anywhere in the world. They have other exhibitions.

Big new Old Walls
Inside the big modern bustling city of Datong there is an old City area and a couple of beautiful old temples. Surrounding this area is a monumental, newly built, wall, which will soon be completed to surround the old City area. The wall, temples and views make for an interesting walk. The wall is several kilometres long but the south gate and nearby Huayan monastery are definitely worth the journey, and there are still a few remnants of the old rammed earth walls to be seen.
