4.5City Wall of Pingyao(393 reviews) - Awesome ancient defensive walled-city Points of Interest & Landmarks
The impressive, ancient 6.2 kilometres in length, and averaging 10 metres in height, wall around the city is estimated to have been built over the 827BC to 782BC period. Since the 14th century, this has been a city of the Chinese Han people. Inside the city walls, there are temples of Shuanglin and Zhenguo. There is a lot of history here, and since 1982, it has been protected by a number of Chinese laws, including, the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Protection of Cultural Relics. The ancient city walls of China a very spectacular. Other than in size, this has many of the same characteristics as the ancient walls of Xi’an and Nanjing.See more..
Not really much to say, it’s a wall with 9 dragons ceramic on it. The wall is not original, the dragons appear to be. It’s free admission, in a nice little park, there are washrooms and a little gift shop. The Shanhua Monastery down the road has an almost identical wall with 5 dragons on it. Go have a look, get some photos and then 10 minutes later go see something else.See more..

4.5Mengshan Mountain Buddha(60 reviews) - Nice spot to visit Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
I used DiDi to visit there. From the southern part of Taiyuan(near Wucheng Residential District), it took 40min and ¥40 to the closest parking lot. From the parking lot, we walked a few minutes to the ticket office. There are some stores on the way to the office, so I recommend to get a bottle of water and some snacks if you like. A ticket was ¥50 to enter the sight, including round trip bus ticket. Through the entrance gate, bus station is very close. We ride the bus for a couple of minutes. After that, all the visitor must walk to the top of the mountain. The staff told me it would take 40-60min, but I thought it took us only 20-30min to the Buddha. The road was clean and easy to walk, there were so many benches, rest rooms and bins on the sidewalk. I saw some cleaning staff were sweeping the street. I went here on spring, so the weather was just perfect. I enjoyed watching trees and creek so I didn’t feel it was a long walk. When you climb up the last stairs to the top, the Buddha is there. Mesmerizing. Lucky for us, very few people were there. And you can walk up a little more to the top, right under the Buddha. I prayed, took some awesome pictures, and meditated. The trip was something like this. The staff here did not speak English, but if you know there process you will not have trouble. See more..

Entrance fee is 10 RMB. Its restored and gives you feeling of the Asien time. You can walk up and have a 360 degree view around. Inside are also some old pictures of the city and new drawings of some sightseeing spots around. The location is very central to other spots. In the area around a lot of restore work is ongoing so some renovation spots will be open or other are close due to that work. Thanks for reading my review and I hope it was helpful for your trip. The Chang Family Compound, between Taiyuan and Pingyao, is a wonderful place, built by a family who made their fortune by trading tea. It is not an exaggeration to call it magnificent; it is absolutely huge with many different buildings and interesting insights into China's history, and a lovely garden. This impressive red drum tower, located in the middle of a busy roundabout in central Linfen, is the second tallest drum tower in China. (At 43.75 meters tall, it is just a bit shorter than the one in Beijing.) Also known as Dazhonglou, this magnificent square tower was built in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The structure has been damaged by several major earthquakes and has been rebuilt a number of times. The foundation is original, but the main wooden structure was completely rebuilt (to the earlier design) in 1984 after having been damaged in 1948 during the Chinese Revolution. This drum tower is supported by 12 massive wooden pillars, each one meter in diameter. The building contains no nails and is held together by a series of interlocking wooden pieces. The tower is several floors tall, and visitors are permitted to climb to the top, where they can enjoy a nice view out over the city, including of the eight-sized pagoda at Dayun Temple nearby. The drum on display on the lower floor is not the original one, but the bell on display in some 800 years old.Location: The Linfen Drum Tower (Dazhonglou) is located on Gulou Xi Dajie in central Linfen.See more..

It is almost impossible to miss this square, if you're in Taiyuan City. It is the landmark that I always use for taxi drivers. If you are a foreigner, like me, people will stop to chat to you. There is great shopping nearby. It is a fascinating place. Taiyuan is a sensational city. Make sure that you go to the Taiyuan Library: the architecture is exceptional. This is where China invests wisely.See more..
4.5Shengmu Hall(9 reviews) - Must go visit the Sacred Mother Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
As this place has great historical significance, it is a mandatory place to go if you are a tourist. Get a good guide to explain this place to you otherwise it would just be an old temple with faded paint and a slanted tree. This temple turned into one for the Sacred Mother of Tang Shuyu because the Song emperor did not one a great leader to arise from here to defeat his dynasty as happened before. So in the aftermath of an earthquake, he used the excuse to change the temple as well as the surrounding Fengshui. It was a successful undertaking as no more great leader came from this place.See more..
4.0Taiyuan Chunyang Hall(9 reviews) - The old Shanxi Museum Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
Honestly, the architecture and the collection are marvellous. It really worths 30 yuan entry fee to hang about for more than 2 hours as there are bronze ware, ceramics, wall painting, status, you name it. However, with the new museum well designed without entry fee, this Taoist temple is like a relic hidden in a busy city. There is only simple illustration to a beautiful ware dating back to Tang dynasty and there is no official guide or souvaniour at all. It is really sad to see heritages left as this.See more..
3.5Jincheng People's Square(8 reviews) - Currently a building site Monday: 8:10 AM - 5:00 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks
When I was there in March 2013 it was a building site, nothing to see. Apparently there's a big statue of Mao there. Walking through the market was an experience, lots of overpowering smells, nothing you'd really want to eat though. There are some good restaurants within a block.See more..
4.5Taihangshan Daxiagu(8 reviews) - Nice place Mountains • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Canyons • Forests
Nice place to visit after going to the glass bridge. Nice leisure walk after going to the glass bridge. Lockers are at the opposite entrance to this place from the glass bridge.See more..
One of the mandatory places to visit in Pingyao is one of the Escort Agencies. This is a necessary service in the old days when law and order does not cover the whole country and outlaws lie awaiting outside the city walls. The Performance "Youjian Pingyao" is based on the story of an escort agency, a chinese version of "Saving Private Ryan".See more..
Very nice area, good mixture of preserved nature and local people and touristic place. But there is a high risk that in a few years the charm is gone, lot of buildings are built now. Choose a guest house run by local people requiring some walking, go hiking with guides, endavour local food.See more..

4.5Nanlao Spring(3 reviews) - Part of Jinci Points of Interest & Landmarks
Again this is part of Jinci. It is located on the left of the main Sacred Mother Temple. Due to ground disturbance, this spring has actually stopped flowing. The flowing water that is seen is due to a new mechanical pump being installed. The water flow out nicely from the "Dragon's mouth. The water from this spring is split in a ratio of 7:3. The story behind this is during a drought, the villages were all fighting for water for their fields. To solve this problem, the magistrate came out with a idea, he put 10 copper coins into a boiling oil and the village will each send a representative to take out as many coins as possible with bare hands. So the guy from the first village managed to retrieve 7 coins, but as he suffered serious burns, he died in the process. The little structure in the middle is to commemorate him.See more..

I've gone twice and both our tours were in Mandarin, luckily we had a friend who translated for us both times. That being said the alcohol factory is interesting even without any explanation. 4.0Lao Niu Wan(1 review) - Where the Great Wall meets the Yellow River Points of Interest & Landmarks
It is really an exceptional site. But tourism seems to develop very fast, soon it might lose some of its charm. It is half an hour drive from Pianguan on very windy roads. The owner of the only hotel took us on a great boat trip on the river, the best way to see the site, watched the sun set from the castle that is overlooking the river and the following morning the sunrise over an amazing mountain landscape.See more..
