4.5Jinsi Temple(151 reviews) - Wonderful gem! Religious Sites
I absolutely loved visiting Jinsi. It was a beautiful day when I went, and the climate was excellent. There is a lot to see there, and it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and a clear flowing creek. There weren't any English speaking tour guides there, but there was ample English to read, so I don't feel like I missed out too much. I would definetly recommend visiting here if you are in Shanxi. Bonus: it wasn't very crowded! See more..
4.0Huayan Temple of Datong(144 reviews) - Beautiful view Monday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Religious Sites
This is in the middle of the Ancient City, a very large Temple complex, 50RMb entrance fee. If I recall correctly, almost the entire place is a rebuild for <15 years ago, in fact almost all the Ancient City is a modern rebuild. If you like Chinese Temples, go have a look see. It’s the same pattern and architecture you’ll see at almost all Chinese Temples, so if you don’t have the time to have a look, you’ll be okay. Two cool parts, they have a relic of the Buddha in the underground part of a Temple, his finger bone. There is also a huge Temple you can climb up and get a great view of the city. As Temple complexes go, it’s very well done, lots of photo opportunities. If you have the time, go have a look.See more..
4.0Shuanglin Temple(117 reviews) - Don't bicycle here unless you have a death wish! Religious Sites
This temple has beautiful sculptures and is well worth the short trip from Pingyao. On the advice of Lonely Planet, we biked here--what a mistake! The distance is only 7 km, but you must bike along a major highway that is full of tractor-trailers. Not only did we fear for our lives, but the route was completely devoid of scenery. Highly recommend taking a taxi instead.See more..

4.5Shanhua Monastery(36 reviews) - Good experience Monday: 6:30 AM - 7:00 PM Ancient Ruins • Religious Sites
Honestly, in China it is so very easy to get “Templed-out” from all the temples and monasteries there are. They all follow the same patterns, architecture, style and colours. Eventually you dread going to yet another “famous” temple, because they all start to look the same. That all being said, I’m happy I paid a visit to this place. It doesn’t feel like many other temples that came from the same temple factory. Yes, the place has been around for 1000 years and has likely been rebuilt a dozen times in that period, including recently, but there are some buildings here that look and feel, “old”. It’s a nice change. There are great opportunities here for some photos. There is a wonderful water area that makes for great photos. Very few people as it is away from the main tourist area. Free admission. There is a 5-dragon wall outside. If you only have time for one temple or monastery on your trip, head to this one.See more..
4.5Zhenguo Temple(29 reviews) - This is an undiscovered gem Religious Sites
There's only one thing to see here: Wanfo (Ten Thousand Buddhas) Hall, the only surviving building of a once much-larger Buddhist monastery. But what a building it is! Built in 963, it's one of the oldest wood buildings in China, or in the world, for that matter. The architectural details---particularly the bracketing and eaves----are extraordinary. Inside is an ensemble fo eleven painted-clay Buddhist sculptures, also dating from the tenth century---both beautiful and intensely spiritual. Zhenguo is a short drive (12k) outside Pingyao and is surrounded by cornfields. It's completely off the tourist circuit. We were there for half an hour, and during that time only two other visitors dropped by.See more..
3.5Qingxu Guan(22 reviews) - A neat temple but optional Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
I couldn't make it a must see but if you have time, and if you are interested in wood carving architecture, then you can visit this place. If you have seen other temples in Pingyao like Shuanglin Temple, Zengkuo Temple, and Temple of City God, then this is similar. The wooden carving is key point, highlight of the temple. 30 minutes at most should be sufficient.See more..

There's a local saying that one cannot say to have been to Wutaishan for pilgrimage if one does not visit Dailuo Ding. Situated on top of one of the peaks - it has a good view of the Tayuan Monastery and the valley below. There's gondola lifts up to the peak. Pilgrims make a 45mins walk up. Some even prostrate every 3 steps up. Main shrine is dedicated to the Five Manjushris of the five Wutai peaks.See more..

3.5Jinzhong Erlang Temple(13 reviews) - Immaculate Little Tao Shrine Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
The thing about Pingyao is that most tourists just wander up and down the main street of town, where all the tourist stalls are concentrated, and then you hear lots of complaints that the old town is just a 'tourist trap'. Yet on the 700 year old city walls you can wander for a kilometre at a stretch without seeing another tourist. Another way to have a more tranquil experience is to do a tour of Pingayo's Buddhist and Taoist shrines. They have some of the most delightful murals, carving and statues in the old town, and unless you are unlucky and your visit coincides with the arrival of a Chinese tour group, it should be a more relaxed, peaceful experience. This particular Taoist temple, with a number of different shrines and altars, is very well-preserved and maintained and makes for an enjoyable leisurely visit. Look out for the Taoist demons!See more..
4.5Xian Tong Temple(11 reviews) - Appropriated Temple Spent More than 3 hours Religious Sites
The white Stupa in front of the temple was originally part of Xian Tong Temple. But during the Ming Dynasty it was appropriated by the emperor to give credit to his mother so that she would have a better after-life. So the new temple beside is called Tayuan Temple. The Bell Tower was also cut out from the main compound of the temple and you have to enter Xian Tong Temple sideways. Anyway the emperor always get what he wants. The amazing feature of the temple would be the Guilded Bronze Hall. Striking in the sun.See more..
4.0Chongshan Monastery(11 reviews) - A Little Piece of History Religious Sites
I visited Chongshan Monastery after visiting Shuangta Si. (It is about a 15 minute drive between the two). It is very small and takes about 5 minutes to see everything, but it is pleasant to see the monks lounging under the trees and playing with dogs. The temple itself has a dark, ancient air and is still used by locals and students praying for exam results. This temple is only 1/40th of its original size. It is a pity to think more of this could have been here to make it a more noteworthy attraction. Even the old houses around the temple were being demolished during my visit creating dust and traffic entry problems. I didn't see any beggars, maybe they were off for lunch, but I had my fair share of them in Shanxi province elsewhere. Note the 2 Yuan entrance fee which will be asked for by one of the monks.See more..

4.5Changping Guandi Temple(9 reviews) - The temple is like a palace Monday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites

This is a beautiful, colorful, peaceful temple at the top of a cluster of temples. There are spectacular views of the mountains, some of which were snow-capped when we were there, as well as many temples all around. There are 108 steps, same number as in Buddhist rosary, leading down from this temple. Due to my vertigo, it was a challenge for me to make it down but a helpful Chinese couple walked in front of me from top to bottom. For photographers it's a great place to take stunning photos. There were crowds there but I didn't feel it detracted from the experience.See more..

4.5Guangsheng Temple(6 reviews) - What an historic beauty Monday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Religious Sites
Guangsheng Temple is a magnificent Buddhist temple built in south-central Shanxi Province in the year 147. The highlight of the temple is the spectacular Feihong Pagoda, the largest and best preserved glazed pagoda in China. Octagonal in shape and nearly 500 years od, this 13-storey pagoda really glimmers on sunny days. This temple has many other fantastic elements and could be a UNESCO World Heritage Site one day. I would be happy to provide a full write-up if you could give it a listing. 4.5Wanfoge Temple(5 reviews) - Wuye Temple or "Five Uncle" Temple Religious Sites
The rough story goes something like this. This region faces drought frequently and the people suffered. So one day, Manjusri went to borrow a "cool stone" from the Dragon King to cool this region and bring rain. The Dragon King was unhappy and lost his cool. Then his Five Dragon Princes came here to retrieve the cool stone but were placated by the Manjusri Bodhisattva. So this temple is a place now where many people come to pray for rain and for their wishes to come true. Because of his ability to grant wishes, this temple is the most popular temple in Wutai. May 13 (Lunar) is the birthday of Wuye and is said to be the date where your dreams declared to Wuye are most likely to come true. While the entrance to the temple is free, if you wish to pray, you have to pay a high price for the incense. (RMB 100, 200, 300 etc) candles, etc. There are also many privateer that will accost you when you try to pray. They will assist you to light your incense and teach you to pray in the four directions. They will then ask for a very high service fee like RMB 300-1000. I tried to pay him RMB50 but we settled for RMB100. In other parts of Asia, such a temple (with such services) would typically be considered a Taoist Temple but here it is combined with Buddhist Gods and the chinese here has consummate skills in commercialising both Gods and Buddhas. If your wish were to come true, then you are required to return to the Temple within 3 years to offer your thanks. At this temple, and other temples, you can find offerings and donations from people (typically HongKies) whose wishes have been granted by the Five Dragon Prince (Wuye). May you have a fruitful trip here and experience the power of Wuye.See more..

4.0Baohua Temple(2 reviews) - Непарадный храм Religious Sites
See more..
