Brown eared pheasants

Still there. An amazing experience to see these lovely birds with the sound of zen Buddhist chants in the background.

Impressive monastery famous for Brown-eared Pheasant
As a small group of birdwatchers we travelled here primarily for one bird - the rare Brown-eared Pheasant, which is relatively common as it is fed by the Buddhists and not hunted in the immediate area. This Zen Buddist monastery is really quite impressive, with a welcoming and imposing wooden pogoda at the entrance, and has been destroyed and re-built several times since it was originally established in the fifth century! It was also being renovated during our visit. It is located in Shanxi Province and it took us about 1.5 hours by car to cover the 55 Kms from Taiyuan (which we flew in to). The monastery is surrounded by forest and so in a brilliant setting. We found one trail into the forest but there may well be others. A recommended cultural visit for a couple of hours.
