Shuanglin Temple, Shanxi, China

Don't bicycle here unless you have a death wish!

This temple has beautiful sculptures and is well worth the short trip from Pingyao. On the advice of Lonely Planet, we biked here--what a mistake! The distance is only 7 km, but you must bike along a major highway that is full of tractor-trailers. Not only did we fear for our lives, but the route was completely devoid of scenery. Highly recommend taking a taxi instead.

well worth a visit before leaving Pingyao
this temple is on the way to Pingyao High Speed Rail Station. It is well worth leaving Pingyao about another hour early then planned and make this a stop on the way out of town. Though the place are poorly lite, and many of the statutes are covered in dust, it does not impact your enjoyment of the beauty of these centuries old clay statues. The temple does not have an English speaking tour guide, but there are plenty of articles / webpage written about Shuanglin Temple's statues that you can read while looking at them, so its not a big deal. Go visit it, well worth the extra trip.

Art gem a few km from Pingyao
Stunning temple. Although it should receive UNESCO money it is not restored to its ancient splendor... Such a shame as if fully restored would be an amazing site. Still worth the visit. When we visit there were just a few other tourists.
