Because of the lack of snow, ski resorts were slow to open. But we were glad we came here. The highlight was the four huge stage backdrops painted by Chagall for the ballet “Aleko”. See more..

We enjoyed the permanent exhibition at the Towada Art Center. The light and airy building housed an international group of contemporary artists. The rooftop exhibit is closed during winter months. If driving, follow the signs to the lot. When you pay your entrance fee, they will give you a parking pass to exit. See more..

The art displays are on the first to 3rd floor. There is an entry fee to the second and third floor. I forgot how much but minimal. The displays were beautiful. The only one I can remember is the painting which occupied one wall of the second floor. The coffee shop had a very relaxing view. See more..

<October 22,2018 - April 19,2019>museum closed for winter Teizo Morohashi (1934-2003), founder of XEBIO Corporation. He spent roughly 10 years collecting works of art for a museum. He donated these, together with the museum site, buildings, and other facilities, to the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art Public-Interest Foundation based on his vision of “Enabling a wide range of people to enjoy and experience numerous masterpieces of Western modern art.” That marked the opening of the Morohashi Museum of Modern Art in the picturesque Aizu-Bandai-kogen area of his home prefecture of Fukushima in 1999. The museum’s collection of Dali works is the third largest in the world after those of the Dali Museum in the U.S. state of Florida and the Dali Theatre and Museum in Figueres, Spain, and it is the only museum in Asia where Dali’s works are on permanent exhibit. 5. 4.5 Ken Domon Museum of Photography (96 reviews)
    - A must see
    Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Art Museums
Ken Domon Museum of Photography image
▼The first museum of photography in Japan Ken Domon is one of the representative photographers of postwar Japan. He took news photos grounded in realism, portraits and snapshots of famous and ordinary people, as well as photos of cultural assets such as temples and Buddhist statues. His lens captured moments that revealed truths in the turbulent Showa era. Ken Domon Museum of Photography was built in his hometown of Sakata in October 1983 as the first Japanese museum dedicated solely to photographs, and is said to be the only photography museum in the world built for an individual. Here, all 70,000 pieces of his photographic work, including his lifework, “A Pilgrimage through Old Temples,” “Muroji Temple,” “Hiroshima,” “The Children in Chikuho,” “Bunraku Puppets,” and “Features” are preserved and shown to the public in regular succession. 6. 4.0 Homma Art Museum Garden (72 reviews)
    - Fall in love, take pics without the crowds
    Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Gardens • Art Museums
    Homma Art Museum Garden image
The entrance fee seemed a bit steep to be honest but it was worth it. The newer building houses various Homma Family treasures, which do need explanation, all signs in Japanese but they do have English pamphlets and you might find someone to explain. The villa and garden in various seasons never fails to delight. My son loves to run around the garden, escaping, climbing, taking different paths. I love the second floor hand thrown glass, it is slightly blurry. It is essentially a house but anyone who appreciated Japanese architecture will love it. YOu can also get green tea and sweets here and enjoy it sitting on very old cool furniture. I was lucky enough to see a play performed in the garden, while sitting inside with all the door open. It is a place to relax and contemplate in my opinion. See more..

    Iwate Museum of Art image
They have fine artwork of local artists, Shunsuke Matsumoto, Yasutake Funakoshi, Testugoro Yorozu and so on. What I liked was the sculptures of Twenty-Six Martyrs of Japan a group of Catholics who were executed by crucifixion on February 5, 1597, at Nagasaki. Yasutake Funakoshi was a Christian himself, and he left a lot of sculptures relating to Christianity. You can see many of his work at the permanent exhibition. See more..

    - A splendid collection

Living in Paris, I go quite often to Orsay or marmottan museums. The 40 paintings exposed (monet, pissaro, van dongen, Chagall,... ) are very fine. There are very well representating the period 1830/1930. I was amazed by the 5 Chagall in the same room. It is very rare. See more..
