Interesting architectural structure surrounded by a peaceful green surroundings. Very serene when I was there and there wasn’t a lot of people as well. This was where the late Date Masamune was enshrined. It was built in the year after his death according to his last will and testament by the next lord of Sendai-han, Date Tadamune. It was designated a national treasure in 1931. However, the mausoleum sustained massive damage from an airstrike by the US Air Force on July 10, 1945 during strategic bombings in World War II. It was burned down in a fire, along with the Kansenden of Sendai-han's second-generation lord, Date Tadamune and the Zenouden of Sendai-han's third-generation lord, Date Tsunamune. There was dispute over the reconstruction of the mausoleum, but reconstruction began in 1974 and finished in 1979. During excavation of the site, Date Masamune's remains and burial accessories were discovered. See more..

We purposely stopped by Akita for 1 night to visit the shrine. We were lucky to chance upon a weekday mass, and was invited to join. The nuns also invited us to join the station of the cross, which truly blessed our trip. The shrine closes at about 4pm. There is a small gift shop where tokens and religious items are available. Despite what other reviews say, I think this is quite inaccessible to public transportation. Best to take a taxi going to this place, and have an taxi pick you up after. The nearest bus stop is probably 3 kms away and roads are uphill. Taxi ride cost about Y4000 from Richmond Hotel. See more..
