The Tachi-Neputa House is a museum that displays parade floats featured in the city's Neputa summer festival. These huge floats are 23 metres high and made of wire and rice paper. The workmanship of these floats is simply amazing and the museum's set up allows visitors to walk around to see the floats from all angles along the 3 floors. Well worth a visit! See more..

    - Local culture

    Namahage Museum image
Though it was close to an hour drive from Akita city, we continued to visit this museum as the local culture here in Akita is centred on namahage. Even at the JR train station, you can see traces of namahage. When we visited, there wasn’t many people as it might be the Low season. It was late November when we visited. The museum has alot of namahage masks on display. There was a show dictating how this namahage started and there were many stories. It was intriguing to watch the video and then looking at the artefacts on display. At the end of the museum, like all tourists destination in Japan, they have a souvenir shop. One can literally buy a namahage mask home but for me, I just bought some snacks for the drive back to Akita city. Overall, it’s a very good experience understanding the local culture and I must say if you are in Akita, this should be your top itinerary. See more..

    - Fun

Akita city Minzoku Geinou Densho-kan image
Since our visit didn't coincide with a festival, this was a good way to see and experience the Kanto lanterns. In addition to many displays, performers gave demonstrations of the different types of balancing done with the long bamboo polls holding up multiple rows of lanterns. The demonstration room has an exceptionally high ceiling so they can add on many bamboo extensions. Following this, the audience is invited to try holding up a shorter pole with lanterns. It is difficult holding up the weight with a swaying bamboo pole and must take lots of practice to balance the much larger ones used in the festival. See more..

    Akita Akarenga Kyodokan image
It was a savings to pay the admission here that also included the Performing Arts Heritage Hall and neighboring historic house a few blocks down the street. This red brick building was interesting for it's architecture and history, but mostly for the upstairs exhibits of silverwork/metalwork, wood block prints, and a couple of manga artists. There were lots of original works at all the exhibits and we were particularly amazed by the wood block prints. See more..

    Coal & Fossil Museum image
I have never been to a fossil museum before so the big dinosaur sceletons were really impressive. Iwaki seems to be really proud of that Suzuki dinosaur which got discovered around there. The best part was the long display series about the coal miners life from the Meiji period until the latest time. See more..

    Somaro image
Dating back over 200 years to the Edo Period, Somaro is a maiko teahouse and museum in the northern port city of Sakata. It is one of the very few places outside of Kyoto where geisha culture can be enjoyed. Originally called Soma-ya, Somaro's geisha culture was brought up to Northern Japan through the thriving trade ties that once existed between Kyoto and Sakata. During that time, Somaro served as an entertainment destination and exquisite restaurant for the many merchants and shipping agents who shuffled through this city. Beautifully restored in 2000, Somaro is a museum and maiko dance house that preserves and showcases the splendor of Sakata's geisha culture. See more..
