The first museum in Malaysia

This is a very educational and well-maintained museum. Established in the late 1880s, the Perak Museum is the oldest museum in Malaysia. It has a diverse collection of almost everything about Perak including a section exhibiting old animal skeletons. Walking through this museum is like a journey through time. In the main hall, there is a massive collection of niello-ware made from silver and copper (as we’re told by the museum staff). It is called Cutam in Malay. I’ve never heard a Malay word ‘Cutam’ before and that was the first time I saw Cutam. The cultural gallery displays local handicrafts, clothing, musical instruments and artworks aged more than 100 years old. Sometimes old stuff can be eery and interesting at the same time. We found one mannequin wearing vintage pink kebaya with weird head (see attached picture). Besides this ghostly feeling, we enjoyed our trip to this museum very much. Entrance is only RM2 per person.

    Oldest Museum in Malaysia
Read that it was the oldest museum in Malaysia. The building is a stately white with interesting architecture. It is one of the stops on the heritage walk. Good to stop over on a hot day as it provided some respite from the hot sun for a while. There are outdoor and indoor exhibits. The outdoor exhibits are on the history of transportation. The indoor exhibits consists of land animal species and water species. It also has a silverware exhibit. Entrace fee is RM5.00.

    Average experience
The museum has some interesting exhibitions, but the experience was marred by highly inconsiderate guests treating the place like a fun house for their brat children. Upstairs in the gallery, two families of locals were lounging around on the floor while their spawn ran around the place yelling and screaming. It took my wife to berate them in Malay before they decided to leave. All while the useless guard and staff were right below, could hear it all, yet did nothing.
