    Parroquia Santiago Apostol image
We visited this 1649 Parish church and the plaza area, a focal point of this small town’s designation as a UNESCO site. The single nave interior is beautiful with the blue and yellow accents and the colors of the multi wood parquet floors. It’s a quiet haven in an otherwise congested town overflowing with tourists. Parking was not a problem just 4 blocks from the church or follow one of the many men holding the ‘E’ signs for closer pay parking. See more..

Parroquia del Senor de la Misercordia image
While visiting Ocotlan we came across this beautiful church. It was built on top of ruins of the parish that was destroyed on October 2nd 1847 after a earthquake that destroyed all of the buildings except the Chapel of Immaculate and the house of Don & Lupita Castellanos, who helped look after the people. It took 23 years to built the new church and it was completed on Sep 29th 1870. The alter has a lovely crucifix and statues along the walls, also pictures showing what happened to the town. There is a large cross on the left of the church and a lovely fountain in the front. See more..

    Parroquia de San Francisco image
The Park is along the edge of the lake on the south end of town with many meandering sidewalks and paths to walk along. Be prepared to be charged 5 Pesos if you go in the middle of the day, though if you go early morning or late afternoon, there's a good chance the woman won't be there to charge you. Good place to walk your dog or just yourself for shade and quiet. See more..

Friday 13th April and we visited Mascota as part of Vallarta Adventures Pueblos Magicos tour and one of the highlights was a visit to this Church in the centre of the Town, opposite the Square or Plaza. In the grounds of the Church is a statue to commemorate Saint José María Robles Hurtado, who was from Mascota. He was a Mexican priest martyred during the Cristero War which took placed between 1926 and 1929. Inside the Church is a picture on one of the walls of the Saint. The Basilica has a high arched ornate ceiling. There are a number of statues of Saints along the sides of the pews, which leads down to a large very striking altar, with a number of religious statues of Mary the Mother of God and Jesus Christ. While we were in the Square there was a peel of the Church bells, which range out across the town. The bells are housed in the impressive clock/bell tower that is a feature of the Mascota skyline. Visitors are requested to remove hats/caps when entering - photography is permitted. Entry to the Basilica is free, however there is a donation box near the door, all helps towards the upkeep and maintenance of this magnificent building. Beautiful Church well worth a visit, take a few moments in one of the pews to enjoy the splendour and tranquillity of this holy place. See more..
