Hagley is the former industrial site of the original black powder works of the DuPont Company founded in Delaware in 1802 and powered by the natural resources that surrounded it. Today, it is 235 acres of wooded rolling hills along the rushing Brandywine River dotted with hundreds of stone ruins of the black powder industry, dozens of restored buildings associated with the business, and the first du Pont family home built in America. Here, for more than 200 years, the DuPont Company and family experimented, innovated, and pursued the American Dream. Hagley has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1972. The site is a National Historic Landmark, National Recreation Trail, and a Historic Engineering Landmark. See more..

    - So Much More Than Expected

    Rockwood Park & Museum image
I have been on many historic house tours, but this one was much more than I expected, and better than the usual tour. The unique thing about this house is that there is so much original furniture and family belongings still in place. You get the feeling that you are a guest of the family rather than just on a tour. The museum staff have used these items to tell a unique story. Also, on the East Coast of the US you get worn out with colonial house tours, and Rockwood Museum gives you an opportunity to experience a completely different era. Not only is the inside of the house a good experience, but the grounds are lovely and an attraction in their own right. The GPS enabled garden tour adds much to the interpretation of the setting. Lewes Historical Society image
Our group of four thoroughly enjoyed the Lewes Historical Tour "Introduction to Lewes: A Maritime Destination" led by the volunteer Jack who was extremely knowledgeable about Delaware's early American history. As an unexpected bonus, we were able to sit down in the tavern on the Historical Society's campus and listen to volunteer "tavern keeper" Bill Hicks' lively presentation on the tavern's history and the everyday drinks and economic practices which made the Tavern such a thriving enterprise in early Lewes' history. The entire expereince was enhanced by the fact that the weather that day was picture perfect! See more..

Flying in the B-25 Panchito was truly an unforgettable experience. Bill, who helped me organize this gift for my husband was amazing, and made everything he could to accommodate us. Every crew member was beyond nice and made sure we had a great experience. They are all volunteers who are passionate about aviation, and they spent time to tell us about the aircraft, the association and any thing we asked about. The gift was for my husband who is an aviation fan, he loved it. I loved it too and I’m so glad I took a ride as well. The aircraft is a piece of history and it’s genuinely a fabulous experience. We highly recommend it for any one looking for a unique flying experience!! See more..

    Treasures of the Sea image
My husband and I were on our way to catch the Lewes Ferry and decided to stop and check out the exhibit. My husband is from Spain so we thought that it would be interesting to see and it really was. It was hidden on the school's campus, but once we found it the guide, her assistant, and the gift shop helper were great. The artifacts were exhibited so that some could be touched. Silver bars, cannons, gold, jewelry, and other relics are all there to be enjoyed. Definitely found it interesting! See more..

    Lewes History Museum image
First off, if you're with kids, the children's section is AWESOME! The museum is very nice and elegantly put together, I've grown up spending my summers in Lewes and loved learning more about the history of the town. Great rainy day activity or if you're just interested in local history! Would highly recommend for children's section alone, but rest of museum was just as nice! See more..
  18. 5.0 Milford Museum (5 reviews)
    - A Must Visit
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM History Museums
    Milford Museum image
The museum is a lot larger than it seems from the outside. There are several nicely put together exhibits throughout the museum that covers everything Milford. I had no idea Milford had so much history. The museum director was marvelous and she gave us a spectacular tour. I probably wore her out with my auditing mentality and all the questions. I love museums so I could have easily spent a lot longer there than my wife wanted. And it’s free. This is a must stop if you’re in town. I’m sure with so many exhibits you’ll find something to catch you attention. There’s also free parking and the museum is across the street from the library and a short walk to the Riverwalk. 20. 4.5 Newark History Museum (4 reviews)
    - Located along the railroad tracks and a walking trail
    History Museums
    Newark History Museum image
As a former railroad station, it is not surprising that the Newark History Museum is located along the railroad tracks and a paved walking/running/hiking trail. It is encouraging that several small town railroad stations along the eastern lines have been made into museums. There is plenty of parking under the bridge for College Avenue. Although the museum is not open in winter months, one can still enjoy the well-kept grounds and classic brick building. See more..

  25. 3.0 Bridgeville Historical Society Museum (1 review)
    - Small museum

    Bridgeville Historical Society Museum image
Stopped in the Bridgeville Historical Society Museum during the annual Apple scrapple festival (2nd full weekend in October). This is my second visit to the museum. I visited previously during another Apple Scrapple festival several years back. The museum is rather small, just one small room. They have some information on Rapa scrapple, railroads, agriculture, T.S. smith & sons and etc. They had an organ, a vintage dress, a cider press and some other artifacts regarding the region on display. I was not real impressed with the museum. It was free during the festival, so nothing lost. The staff really did not engage us much, so that was disappointing. Maybe if they took the time to point out some interesting tidbits, it would have peaked our interest to read more, but we just strolled in & back out onto the street. See more..
