Cathedral of Saint Domnius in Split Country Croatia Denomination Roman Catholic Architecture Style Ancient/Romanesque Years built 4th century Clergy The Cathedral of Saint Domnius (Croatian: Katedrala Svetog Duje), known locally as the Sveti Dujam or colloquially Sveti Duje, is the Catholic cathedral in Split, Croatia. The cathedral is the seat of the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska, headed by Archbishop Marin Barišić. The Cathedral of St. Domnius is a complex of a church, formed from an Imperial Roman mausoleum, with a bell tower; strictly the church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the bell tower to Saint Domnius. Together they form the Cathedral of St. Domnius. The Cathedral of Saint Domnius, consecrated at the turn of the 7th century AD, is regarded as the oldest Catholic cathedral in the world that remains in use in its original structure, without near-complete renovation at a later date (though the bell tower dates from the 12th century). We visited this 2000 UNESCO site today, arriving after the 9 AM service on a cloudy morning. After paying 30 kn each, we walked the bland gloomy interior to inspect its high points; 1589 bishop tomb, 105’ high dome, and the lacy ceiling of the 1473 baptistery. We had taken exterior photos of the Main Portal, Lion Portal, rows of the sculpted heads to the baptistery in yesterday’s afternoon sun. Our tickets included the new Interpretive Center where we spent more time reading the 3 floors of exhibits detailing the 104 year construction of this cathedral, including the primary builders, financial difficulties of raising 80,000 ducats, and the multi-stage process of sculpting solid stones into a row of faces. We strolled the nearby cobbled medieval streets/alleys where “Arya” wandered and fought when blind in several “Game of Thrones” scenes.See more..

A very beautiful cathedral in the center of the town. The interior of the cathedral is very calm and the wooden beams in top are simplistic and nice. There is a click tower which costs 20hrk to climb and has gorgeous views of the town. Easy to climb: 200 odd stairsSee more..
Primosten is accessed by a short bridge from the Croatian mainland and it is a short walk past shops and old housing to the top of the town where the church, first built in 1483 is sited overlooking the sea. The cemetery on the cliff next to the church is particularly interesting. It was then very pleasant to walk back down into the town square to sit and have an ice cream or drink.See more..
