Beauty spot - but don't go after dark
The sand dunes are one of my favorite places in Gran Canaria, I will never get tired of wandering around and enjoying the most stunning views. We watched the sunset at the mirador and got the idea that there was still enough time to quickly cross through the dunes over to the Meloneras side before dark, but totally underestimated the distance and ended up walking in total darkness and were literally eaten alive by some very nasty mosquitos. We managed to stay on the path but at the end of it, on the Meloneras site, we found a locked gate, shock. Luckily, we did manged to exit through a dry canal. I would not recommend a night trip through the dunes as it was a bit spooky and the insect bites only went away after 2 weeks.

Absolutely beautiful sand dunes
We stayed here for sunset which was beautiful but the sun was setting on the opposite side of the sand dunes and the sea which obviously made our pictures have buildings etc in it. It was still beautiful though and definitely recommend it. We went early March and the temp here was 30 degrees with it cooling down in the evening you only need a jumper. There were lots of people taking different kind of photos and we even saw a baby bump photo shoot happening. All in all lovely place. We didn’t see any of the nudists. The lake is boarded off but you can do bird watching there and it looks like a beautiful glass mirror against the sand dunes.

Great landscape
You can take a bus to arrive in the middle of the dunes, and then decide to walk east to playa Inglés (20 mins) or west to the fort of Maspalomas (30 mins). It is better to bring hats and sun cream! It is not permitted to walk in the dunes but just on an official path in order to protect the reserve. It is really nice and orignal :) I guess I would have felt more prepared to know that it is a commun meeting place for some couples, expecially gay couples. I was quite surprised to see an exhibisionist showing himself up a hill. However, it does not feel unsafe.
