    Grossglockner High Alpine Road image
One of Austria's top 3 destinations amidst the Alps The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is like an ornament of ribbons located between green mountain pastures, colourful flower meadows, rocky rubble, ice and show. It nestles up against hills, follows the course of the natural ground and fits the mountains like a glove. Whooshing waterfalls, the shrill whistling of marmots and the howling wind in the summit regions create an unforgettable high alpine soundscape. And then, all of a sudden, he appears: his majesty, the Grossglockner, the black mountain. Join us for a journey beyond compare up high to the perpetual ice of the glacier! See more..

Driving up from Villach to the Roßtrattenhütte either via bike or by car is in both cases a very special adventure. At several locations are great viewpoints that present the interested viewer an awesome panorama. Then one could enjoy a Brettljausn and some drinks in Roßtrattenhütte or Aichingerhütte or - for the motivated mountaineers - make a walk (good shoes recommended) to the top of Dobratsch gifting you with a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of Carinthia, Italy and Slovenia (in case of good weather). Near the top is the nice "Dobratsch-Gipfel-Haus" offering delicious meals. You have to try the Lasagna - if it is offered (not always available) See more..
  3. 4.5 Nockalmstrasse (185 reviews)
    - Awesome experience

    Nockalmstrasse image
It was our second alpenstrasse of the holiday. The first one was grossglockner but nockalm is just as beautiful. Perhaps less known and definitely less touristic. 19 euro is the entrance price for cars. You can easily spend the whole day on the Nockalm. It is really an unique environment. Very green, lots of cows, large mountains but also a lot of hills. Looks really as in the Milka commercials. There are a lot of view points but they don't have much parking spots. The lake in the beginning (from) the south was really nice. At a lot of stops you can make nice hikes. Just after the top is a nice location to eat something (zechneralm). From here we made a awesome hike to Friesenhalssee. It was a hike of more than an hour to the lake and around an hour back. The views on the way were splendid an there were almost none other people. The only living things we saw were cows. See more..

    Silvretta-Hochalpenstrasse image
The High Alpine Road leading up to the water reservoirs is an engineering feat. Countless curves („Kehren“) lead up to a magnificent scenery all the way up to the Bieler Höhe. Although you need to pay for a Day Pass, it is worth the ride to a spectacular area. See more..

    Malta High Alpine Road image
Whether you're a keen driver or just want to admire the stunning Alpine views, you'll love the Malta Alpine Road. There's a small toll (per passenger) and off you go. The higher you climb, well it just gets better and better. Spectacular scenery, twisting roads, ancient tunnels, and we stopped off at several spots along the road for photographs, including hiking trails past many spectacular waterfalls. The adventure continues at the top of the trail where you can cross the vast Kölnbrein Damn. There is literally something for everyone here. Allow at least half a day to enjoy this visit properly.
