Masoala Nature Guide and Tours Organize image
As a solo female traveler, I pick my guides very carefully, and I was not disappointed with my choice for a 2 day stay, including overnight camping on Nose Mangabe for a very reasonable rate (approximately £125 total). Jean Emile speaks excellent English, is so informative about the plants, animals, insects etc. He was great company and extremely patient with this old girl. He amazed me with his knowledge and especially his ability to find the wildlife on our hikes on the island. He organised everything I needed for the park, from permits, transfer boat, a tent with comfortable mattress & sleeping bag, and he is even a great cook so I enjoyed all the meals he provided. I am very happy to recommend Jean Emile to anyone who wants to see this amazing part of Madagascar, for short trips or long hikes through Masoala National Park. See more..

    - Second time in Masoala with Lauriot

    Visit Masoala image
My husband and I had been to Madagascar in 2016 and liked it so much that went there again this year. The first time we spent only 4 days in Masoala, which was great. This time we decided to spend a whole week there. As the first time, Lariot ([email protected]) organised everything for us. Instead of staying in a lodge in the Tampolo area as we did the first time, this time we hiked from Cap Masoala to Maroantsetra. Pristine nature, lots or animals... Everything you read about it (and more) is true. The scenery was unbeatable and so were the logistics as well. Lauriot organised the transportation, the accommodation, the cook and the delicious food, porters... Unforgettable experience that we can just recommend. Contact: Lariot, [email protected] See more..

    - Cruise on the Pangalanes Canal- a must when visiting Toamasina

    FANILO TOURS image
We had a wonderful time with Fanilo Tours, cruising the Canal des Pangalanes During the 4 hour trip, we stopped at 2 traditional Betsimisarika villages, where we had the opportunity to explore on foot and learn a little of the colorful history of the area, including the construction of this tranquil 645 km waterway. Our English and French speaking Malagasy guide was knowledgeable and personable, happy to respond to my barrage of questions about the local customs, as well as the exotic tropical vegetation lining the banks of the canal. A highlight of the trip was a 10 minute stroll from the canal across the peninsula to a gorgeous white sand beach on the Indian Ocean. Thank you Fanilo Tours for a fun experience! See more..

  11. 5.0 Mananara Nord National Park (1 review)
    - Wildlife experience on extreme road
    National Parks
    Mananara Nord National Park image
The real park is in the village of Antanambe. Out of the beaten track! Between Mananara and Soanierana Ivongo. It is highly recommended to rent a high-lifted 4X4 from Tamatave or Antananarivo. The price is higher but the road is very difficult even extremely difficult. There is a taxibrousse that goes from Tamatave to Mananara but I do not recommend that experience as it is tough even for local people. The landscape is amazing and the endemicity of wildlife is very high. It is a very exceptional place with cloves, waterfall, lemurs, etc. From Antanambe, you can join Sahasoa by boat or by 4WD. There is a small island called Nosy Atafana that is amazing for snorkelling and excursion which is a marine park included to the Mananara national park. In Mananara city, you can visit the ilôt Roger to see the aye-aye! See more..

  13. 5.0 Rainforests of the Atsinanana (1 review)
    - Amazing 5 nights stay
    National Parks
    Rainforests of the Atsinanana image
My husband and I stayed 3 nights in Masoala National Park, and 2 nights on Nosy Mangabe island in end March 2010. We were the only tourists at that time. In Masoala Park, we spotted Red Ruffed Lemur, Sportive Lemur, Lowland Streaked Tenrec, Ring-tailed Mangoose, Brookesia Superciliaris, Brookesia Peyrierasi and many other reptiles (mainly frogs) which we do not have the names, after hours of walk in the rain forest and with the help of the expertise of a highly professional guide. Three Red Ruffed Lemur seem to live close to our accommodation, Chez Arol, and were spotted twice during our three nights stay. On Nosy Mangabe island, we spotted Black and White Ruffed Lemur, White Fronted Brown Lemur, Rufous Mouse Lemur, Fruit Bats and several Leaf-tailed Geckos, among others. Dolphins were spotted while we sailed from Masoala to Nosy Mangabe. A group of White Fronted Brown Lemur seems to visit the campsite on the island regularly in mornings. We did not see any sign of Aye-Aye during our two nights stay. People say Aye-Aye are well hidden in the deep forest. It was far easier to spot lemurs on Nosy Mangabe than in Masoala. Nosy Mangabe seemed to be well protected. We were explained that logging of rosewood in Masoala forest has been a problem. We were also told that people used to hunt wild animals for food. Co-existence of humans and nature seems to be a challenge. Our host encourages tourists to visit these area, since it stimulates local economy and would motivate local people to protect the nature. It was a wonderful stay for us, this place is very special. The rain forest is an irreplaceable asset of the globe. We admire people who are making efforts to find a way for coexistence between people and nature and wish the efforts will be successful. See more..
  14. 5.0 Madagascar Adventure Discovery (1 review)
    - Masoala trip
Multi-day Tours • Hiking & Camping Tours • Photography Tours
This was an excellent tour in the north. Pascal was the perfect guide in our trip in Madagascar, he shared his vast knowledge of the history of both Malagasy culture and the large various ecosystems that exist on the island. Pascal is expert guides of fauna and flora in park, and the not only wildlife that he saw us incredible was amazing but he lead us for snorkeling in marine reserve and kayaking. The food and lodging was perfect for me as well, that trip is unforgettable in my dream. See more..

    - Another great park close to Vakona - can be busy
Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Forests
    Analamazaotra Special Reserve image
We visited this park whilst staying at Vakona Lodge. Out guide purchased the tickets and arranged the local park guide for us, to start with we found it quite busy with lots of other people all trying to watch and follow the same lemurs. However as our walk progressed everyone seem to head off in different directions and the second half of our walk was much quieter. We spent around 3.5-4 hours in the park & saw numerous types of birds, Sifaka lemurs, brown lemurs and Indri lemurs. Hearing the indri song up close was amazing and by this point it was just us and our guides! We also had a young lady with us that was a trainee guide, she lives in the local village and is training to be licensed as a national park guide - great to see and hear about the initiatives in place to introduce and teach the new generations about the wildlife around them. 22. 4.5 Nosy Mangabe Special Reserve (21 reviews)
    - The Paradize for naturalist
Islands • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Nosy Mangabe Special Reserve image
Nosy Mangabe is a historical place! It was the refuge for the pirates during the silk road and the slave trade! At present time, Nosy Mangabe is a protected area that often considered as part of Masoala National Park. In terms of distance, Nosy Mangabe is one hour from Maroantsetra while Masoala is about two hours and half by boat. It is a good place to see the aye-aye if you have the authorization to stay there at night. During the day time, it is a quite place with nice beach. Animals are easier to find in Nosy Mangabe as it is an island but the trail is relatively more challenging. See more..
  23. 4.5 Farankaraina Tropical Park (6 reviews)
    - Quite an adventure just to get there!
Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Farankaraina Tropical Park image
Farankaraina would be the least touristy of the 3 reserves in the Maroantsetra area, after Masoala and Nosy Mangabe island. None of these places receive many tourists so, as you can imagine, being the least touristy of the 3 means that if you go to Farankaraina you are almost guaranteed to be the only tourist there. When it comes to wildlife this park isn’t quite as impressive as some of the other parks in Madagascar but getting there is quite an adventure in itself…. even more so now since bridges along the route to get there were destroyed in the last cyclone in spring 2018. You now have an extra pirogue crossing and have to wade through a waist deep river along the final part of the route. I booked my trip with Nico tours who organised everything for me including my own personal guide, Pascal, who carried all the food and camping gear we needed on his dirt bike. With the exception of a chain on the bike breaking during the river crossing all went pretty smoothly. So if you’re looking for an easy hassle-free destination then this probably isn’t a place that will interest you, but if you’re looking for a real adventure, to get away from all the typical tourist destinations and relax on a beautiful secluded beach adjoining a very nice forest then this is somewhere you should definitely consider visiting. 24. 4.5 Phare de l'Île aux Prunes (5 reviews)
    - Adventure!
    Lighthouses
Phare de l'Île aux Prunes image
This island has one inhabitant who maintains the lighthouse. The day we visited there were 2 fishermen and our small tour group. The short trek through the forest was delightful and the bats were amazing. Our guide was very knowledgeable and spoke English fairly well. You will never have an opportunity to see the inner workings of a lighthouse as well as this and the view is spectacular. The snorkeling was marvelous and the beach is loaded with beautiful shells. Be prepared for primitive conditions on the boat. Don't forget a hat and sunscreen. We were treated to fresh caught poached fish, rice, and fresh coconuts from the island trees but this may not suit every palate so bring your own snacks and water. Bring waterproof bag for cameras and phones. See more..

  26. 4.0 Vakona Private Reserve (433 reviews)
    - We have to admit - we loved Lemur Island
Friday: 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Vakona Private Reserve image
We read a number of mixed reviews and articles about Vakona Island prior to the trip and was a little hesitant about it. I felt like we shouldn't have enjoyed it, but i have to admit - we loved it! Being able to see the lemurs up close is an amazing experience, yes the guides do tempt them a little to come and out and see you or jump on you but they all appeared to be in good condition and healthy. If they were not living on the island that i expect they wouldnt have survived in the wild, so whilst its not a 'natural' experience its still fantastic. And you will have plenty of other opportunities to see lemurs in their natural environment throughout the rest of your trip. See more..
  27. 4.0 Parc Ivoloina (114 reviews)
    - Exquisite park with knowledgeable guides
Friday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Parc Ivoloina image
I have returned for a second visit as my 1st last year was so wonderful. The guides are so knowledgeable and are able to show you things like minute silver frogs that we would have walked straight passed. The park should be commended for their education projects aimed at local school children and communities as this is such important work. The sanctuary is beautiful and very well maintained even after heavy rains. I suggest that you don’t try drive by yourself unless you have a 4x4 or high vehicle as the roads are bad, especially during rainy season. They have a number of different lemur species, along with frogs, snakes and the exquisite giant chameleons. While the park is relatively small, it is very well worth going for the beautiful tropical scenery, very knowledgeable guides and animals. See more..
