  1. 4.0 Vakona Private Reserve (433 reviews)
    - We have to admit - we loved Lemur Island
Tuesday: 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Vakona Private Reserve image
We read a number of mixed reviews and articles about Vakona Island prior to the trip and was a little hesitant about it. I felt like we shouldn't have enjoyed it, but i have to admit - we loved it! Being able to see the lemurs up close is an amazing experience, yes the guides do tempt them a little to come and out and see you or jump on you but they all appeared to be in good condition and healthy. If they were not living on the island that i expect they wouldnt have survived in the wild, so whilst its not a 'natural' experience its still fantastic. And you will have plenty of other opportunities to see lemurs in their natural environment throughout the rest of your trip. See more..
  2. 4.0 Parc Ivoloina (114 reviews)
    - Exquisite park with knowledgeable guides

    Parc Ivoloina image
I have returned for a second visit as my 1st last year was so wonderful. The guides are so knowledgeable and are able to show you things like minute silver frogs that we would have walked straight passed. The park should be commended for their education projects aimed at local school children and communities as this is such important work. The sanctuary is beautiful and very well maintained even after heavy rains. I suggest that you don’t try drive by yourself unless you have a 4x4 or high vehicle as the roads are bad, especially during rainy season. They have a number of different lemur species, along with frogs, snakes and the exquisite giant chameleons. While the park is relatively small, it is very well worth going for the beautiful tropical scenery, very knowledgeable guides and animals. See more..

  4. 4.5 Analamazaotra Special Reserve (94 reviews)
    - Another great park close to Vakona - can be busy
Spent 2-3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas • Parks • Forests
    Analamazaotra Special Reserve image
We visited this park whilst staying at Vakona Lodge. Out guide purchased the tickets and arranged the local park guide for us, to start with we found it quite busy with lots of other people all trying to watch and follow the same lemurs. However as our walk progressed everyone seem to head off in different directions and the second half of our walk was much quieter. We spent around 3.5-4 hours in the park & saw numerous types of birds, Sifaka lemurs, brown lemurs and Indri lemurs. Hearing the indri song up close was amazing and by this point it was just us and our guides! We also had a young lady with us that was a trainee guide, she lives in the local village and is training to be licensed as a national park guide - great to see and hear about the initiatives in place to introduce and teach the new generations about the wildlife around them. 5. 4.5 Nosy Mangabe Special Reserve (21 reviews)
    - The Paradize for naturalist
Islands • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Nosy Mangabe Special Reserve image
Nosy Mangabe is a historical place! It was the refuge for the pirates during the silk road and the slave trade! At present time, Nosy Mangabe is a protected area that often considered as part of Masoala National Park. In terms of distance, Nosy Mangabe is one hour from Maroantsetra while Masoala is about two hours and half by boat. It is a good place to see the aye-aye if you have the authorization to stay there at night. During the day time, it is a quite place with nice beach. Animals are easier to find in Nosy Mangabe as it is an island but the trail is relatively more challenging. See more..
  6. 4.5 Farankaraina Tropical Park (6 reviews)
    - Quite an adventure just to get there!
Spent More than 3 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Farankaraina Tropical Park image
Farankaraina would be the least touristy of the 3 reserves in the Maroantsetra area, after Masoala and Nosy Mangabe island. None of these places receive many tourists so, as you can imagine, being the least touristy of the 3 means that if you go to Farankaraina you are almost guaranteed to be the only tourist there. When it comes to wildlife this park isn’t quite as impressive as some of the other parks in Madagascar but getting there is quite an adventure in itself…. even more so now since bridges along the route to get there were destroyed in the last cyclone in spring 2018. You now have an extra pirogue crossing and have to wade through a waist deep river along the final part of the route. I booked my trip with Nico tours who organised everything for me including my own personal guide, Pascal, who carried all the food and camping gear we needed on his dirt bike. With the exception of a chain on the bike breaking during the river crossing all went pretty smoothly. So if you’re looking for an easy hassle-free destination then this probably isn’t a place that will interest you, but if you’re looking for a real adventure, to get away from all the typical tourist destinations and relax on a beautiful secluded beach adjoining a very nice forest then this is somewhere you should definitely consider visiting. - Great Park run by the community. Do not miss!!

    Vohimana must be VOIMMA image
We spent a full day visiting Vohimana Park. The life and the landscape of the park was amazing. You start by crossing the railroad to arrive to the Vohimana Visitor Center, where you can actually stay overnight. The views from there are amazing, sorrounded by a waterfall and a very beautiful valley. Then, we continued the trek from there spotting different chamaleons and a lot of birds. We even had the chance to see the beetle giraffe. We would recommend this park to everyone and of you have the time, to spend a night there. See more..
