We have to admit - we loved Lemur Island

We read a number of mixed reviews and articles about Vakona Island prior to the trip and was a little hesitant about it. I felt like we shouldn't have enjoyed it, but i have to admit - we loved it! Being able to see the lemurs up close is an amazing experience, yes the guides do tempt them a little to come and out and see you or jump on you but they all appeared to be in good condition and healthy. If they were not living on the island that i expect they wouldnt have survived in the wild, so whilst its not a 'natural' experience its still fantastic. And you will have plenty of other opportunities to see lemurs in their natural environment throughout the rest of your trip.

    LOVED this place!
This place was amazing! We had some of the best food we've had in Madagascar and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are basic but exactly what you need. The hotel is in the forest and it was fun to walk around and do all the activities they offer. We really enjoyed our stay and I can't recommend this place enough!

Best experienced as an introduction to lemurs
If you are on a tour of Madagascar it is good to visit Lemur Island near the start. Lemur Island is a sanctuary for lemurs that might not be able to survive in the wild and many of them are very used to human beings. To many this makes it more of a zoo than a wild life reserve, but there is something indescribable about having a lemur jump on your shoulders, even if they are tempted by 'lemur candy' (i.e. a slice of banana). You reach the island by canoe across a channel of water (designed to keep predators like the fossa away). Later in your tour you'll see lemurs either at Antsibe, Ranomafana or Isalo, but the sightings and behaviour of the lemus there is less predictable.
