Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Sabah, Malaysia

4.0 (813 reviews) Spent Ranking #12 in Sabah National Parks

Beautiful National Park

Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park consists of a number of islands in the South China Sea off the coast of Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah. It is a magnificient marine park where the diving is apparently world class. We do not dive but the people we spoke to the day we were there were from many different countries and were very impressed with what they saw and were all planning on a return visit. We stayed at the Sutera Resort from where you look out at the islands which are only a 20 minute boat ride away. We spent a day on Manukan Island and for a small cost we had a traditional bar-b-que lunch. It was a wonderful way to spend a day relaxing. It is an experience I would highly recommend to everyone.

    Getting dirtier
I first went 20 years ago and whilst it’s still very pretty the predictable explosion of silly ‘tourist stuff’ has occurred since - zip line, sea walking, inflatable course etc. The major disappointment is the amount of rubbish everywhere, this is supposed to be a ‘national park’. Boats are freely available from 3 marinas and en route the plastic floating around is painfully obvious. We picked up bag after bag of trash from the beaches on Sapi, Mamutik and Manukan right under the noses of the ‘lifeguards’ who were ‘pretending not to notice’ they clearly think that doing this is below them. There’s a charge to visit this islands and it makes me think where that money is going?

Good but depends which island you'll go to
What you need to know is that tunku abdulrahman marine park regroups 5 different islands, each one is few kms far from the other. When you buy your ferry ticket at the ferry station, you can be in the same boat with tourits going to different islands. We went just to Sapi and Manulan island (you can check our review for both). If you ha e time you can do one island each day or combine them however you wish.
