    Agnes Newton Keith Home image
Borneo is mainly jungle and wildlife, not that many sites are left from colonial times. The museum gives a great insight in colonial life in Sandakan and the author Agnes Keith as well. Apart from the house and the furniture itself (partly reproductions, partly originals), there are many photos and information about that time. And you have a great view from the hill. See more..

    Monsopiad Cultural Village image
Monsopiad Heritage Village is a traditional village with historical site in the heartland of the Kadazandusun people and it is the only cultural village in Sabah built to commemorates the life and time of the legendary Kadazan and head-hunter warrior "Monsopiad". The direct descendants of Monsopiad, his 6th and 7th generations have build the village on the very land where Monsopiad lived and roamed some three centuries ago to remember their forefather, and to give you an extraordinary insight into their ancient and rich culture. Take a step back into the past, to the days of head hunting and spirit worshipping, when the Bobohizan (High Priestess of the Kadazandusun), ruled the villages and took care of health and spiritual well-being of their people. More than just a Museum, the concept of the Monsopiad Heritage Village is to document, revive and preserve the cultures and traditions, as well as the beliefs of the Kadazandusun people. Monsopiad Heritage Village is privately owned and managed by his direct descendants. Your visit at Monsopiad Heritage Village contribute directly to the conservation of one Malaysia's rich Cultural heritages and traditions. See more..
  3. 3.5 Patau-patau Water Village (11 reviews)
    - Beautiful vilage on stilts

    Patau-patau Water Village image
Patau-Patau is located just minutes away from Labuan town and easily accessible by taxi or rental bicycle. It is built on a huge area and has hundreds of houses occupied by locals and some opening up its door to the public as a home stay option. It takes more than an hour of walking around in order to explore the entire village and appreciate its decades old architecture, local lifestyle & culture. Some of the locals are ever willing to engage on some light conversation, mostly in local dialect. Recommended to bring along an umbrella and some drinking water as it can get quite hot & humid here. You may notice the rubbish under the houses during low tide which is most unfortunate. It is brought in by the tides and gets washed up here when the water receeds. See more..

An 11RM Grab ride from KFC takes you there. From above the few hundred wooden steps you have a beautiful 360 degree view over Semporna area. You can see the volcano caldera from up there. In the museum at the foot of the steps one can learn about this archeological site. One of the two guys from the museum reception (you have to register before your ascend) took us back to town for the Grab rate. See more..
  5. 5.0 Last POW Camp Memorial (4 reviews)
    - A humble experience
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Historic Sites
    Last POW Camp Memorial image
The Last POW Camp Memorial is a memorial which is a 10 minute drive from the centre of, which commemorates the victims (mainly Australians and British) of the Sandakan Death Marches who died during their forced march by the Japanese to Ranau. The memorial area is gated but well-kept and litter free – You have to pay RM3 (which is tiny) to the family who lives next door to enter but they ensure the upkeep of the site. You can also take the steep stairs down to the river which is where the actual POW camp was. I stumbled across this site and I’m glad I did. It was a very interesting place and is a very easy drive off the main road, not far from Ranau. A must visit for all Australians and Brits who are interested in WW2 history. See more..
