Proboscis Monkeys and Sandakan Tour

We organized a Grab Driver - Azrien to take us from Sepilok to Proboscis Monkeys. We also wanted to see the Sandakan Memorial Park so had negotiated via What’s App with Azrien. He turned up on time and was great. First stop was Proboscis Monkeys and Azrien spotted some buffalo on the way in. Loved seeing the proboscis monkeys feeding and watching the alpha male shows his dominance. We were going to stay for two feeding times and go to Sandakan afterwards but decided one feeding was enough so negotiated a city tour with Azrien. He was very accommodating and knew about the different places he took us. His English is pretty good - able to understand most things. He was very patient waiting for us to finish at each place. Get a taxi to wait or a tour, go early!
Well worth a visit to see these amazing creatures- we took a Grab and the driver suggested we get him to wait for us which I’m usually reluctant to do but it was actually a great plan. The 2 feeding platforms are quite far to walk and there is zero WiFi or pretty much no chance to get a grab taxi back! We went early to the first feeding and we’re lucky that only 3 others were there so we had a great experience up close and personal with monkeys doing EVERYTHING monkeys do! We then drove to the 2nd platform and saw the educational film about the sanctuary (they obviously put a fluffy spin on the story) and saw the feeding there. Far more people at this time as I think the tours tend to catch the feedings just before/ after lunch in conjunction with other things on their itineraries so was glad to be able to come and go on our own time and to have our driver waiting to ship us back to our resort with ease at a very reasonable price. Please visit these places with the mindset you are contributing to conservation- not just for what you might observe, it’s not a zoo!!

Proboscis Monkey and more With Mr Farhan
l had the good fortune to encounter silver leaf monkeys , hornbills as well as the proboscis monkeys at Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. As l planned to visit both platforms for feeding times, a car is required to transport to each platform, l hired Mr Farhan, whom a fellow traveller recommended. Mr Farhan pointed out various animals and stopped along the way to allow photographic oppotunities throughtout the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. l also booked for a second day of Sightseeing around Sandakan and highly recommend Mr Farhan as he is reliable and knowledgeable about the Sandakan area and the Sanctuary .
