Kundasang War Memorial, Sabah, Malaysia

4.5 (200 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Sabah Monuments & Statues

Dignified and respectful

The War Memorial was built out of respect for those that died in the Sandakan to Ranau “Death Marches”. It is an excellent place to visit and try to imagine the unspeakable horror and atrocities that were inflicted on our soldiers with only 6 survivors out of some 2350 that were forced to march. More so to pay your respects and thanks to them for giving their lives so we could live ours. I recommend you first visit the audio room for a 20 minute presentation on some of the history to get acquainted. The memorial is divided into 4 gardens. The Australian, British, Malaysian Borneo, and the garden of Contemplation where an honour role lists each soldier that died on the 3 marches. You will probably spend an hour here by the time you pay your own respects. It s a place that touches your soul and leaves a lasting effect.

Great memorial but more should be done to maintain the place.
Very interesting. Definitely a must visit but only 4 stars as the place was not properly maintained eventhough there was an entrance fee. Many plants were either overgrown or wilting. Visited back in June 2019. Hopefully they will improve the place and put up more articles for people to read. I wasn't even aware about the death march that took place and I'm a local tourist!

    Very tasteful memorial
Beautifully kept gardens. One for Australian, one for English and one for people of Borneo and one for all the names of those who died on the Sandakan Ranau death March by the Japanese during World War II. There's displays of information, a souvenir shop and cafe. It's small but worth a visit. The perfume from all the pink roses in the English garden was intoxicating.
