  1. 4.5 Lala Mountain Nature Reserve (91 reviews)
    - Amazing works of mother nature
    Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Lala Mountain Nature Reserve image
Lala Mountain Nature Reserve was way better than Ali Mountain Nature Reserve in my opinion. This place is not that well known to tourists yet hence the walk through the reserve was quiet, peaceful and relaxing. There were over 20 trees that was being marked out and they were all over thousand years old. Good to wear cross trainers and bring along bottles of water to stay hydrated. See more..
  2. 4.5 Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium (73 reviews)

    Sports Complexes
    Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium image
This stadium is the home of the Lamigo Monkeys, a good baseball team. But what is very exciting on this site is the liveliness of the fans. If you are near the area, look for the schedule of games in Lamigo Monkey's website http://www.lamigo-monkeys.com.tw/ and watch a game. There is no dull moments, you will surely love the experience. The full energy of the fans and the lamigirls cheering. The catchy beat of the cheering songs. The fireworks when there is a homerun. And the 4-5 minutes fireworks show after the game. I'm not sure if it is only when the home team wins, but during my visit they do win satisfactorily. Highly recommended to visit. Though I am not much into baseball, I really enjoyed it. The NTD600 entrance fee is very much worth it. See more..

Hutou Mountain Park / Hutoushan Park image
This picturesque park is a highlight of Taoyuan City. It lies between the central area of Taoyuan and the suburb of Guishan. "Hutou" means "tiger head" in Mandarin Chinese. The mountain has a number of interesting features, including cherry trees which bloom in spring. There are also playgrounds and BBQ facilities. There is a good view of the night sky from the mountain, it's something of a lovers' haunt. By the way Taoyuan, literally translated, means "the peach orchard." See more..

I have been to Taimao many times since, and it has continued to improve. Taimao has a good range of shops and eateries. The cinema is quite luxurious. Metro Walk Shopping Center - Taoyuan image
On our 1st day after arriving from Honolulu(after a Tokyo night layover), we took a taxi ride from the Novotel Taoyuan Airport Hotel to this multi-story shopping mall. Arriving an hour earlier than they open, we walked around the neighborhood and visited a Hi-Life convenience store and had a Chinese Baked Bao. Upon opening at 11am, we entered the Metro Walk Mall and spent 4 hours walking from the basement floor, taking the escalators and elevators up the various floors to see hundreds of shops selling LG appliances, Nike and Timberland clothing, Apple products, H&M merchandise, jewelry, shoes, clothing, Lego, toy shops, and a multitude of dining choices and different foods and pastries. On the top of the mall is the Skywalk and includes a cinema with many movies to view. See more..

Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area image
The name of “Dongyanshan” in Dongyanshan National Forest Recreation Area means a “big eye staring at the east” which is what it looks like when looking from Amouping at Shimen Reservoir at sunrise. The park features million-year old geological landscapes, plentiful bird species, insects and mammals, including the Formosan hare (Lepus sinensis ) and the Formosan white-headed flying squirrel (Petaurista alborufus lena), along with the boundless tree sea of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica). It is a relaxing experience to walk through the Japanese cedar forest in the fog then climb up to the top to enjoy the view of the region from Taoyuan to greater Taipei. See more..

    Bodies of Water
    Shihmen Reservoir image
If you visit a friend in Taipei, a trip to the Shihmen Reservoir is almost obligatory. Some 2 million tourists visit this scenic area every year. "Shihmen" means "rock gate." The dam is one of the largest in Taiwan. The dam began construction in 1955 and topped out 1964. It's used for flood mitigation, irrigation and drinking water. As the population of Taoyuan and Taipei has grown, more water has been diverted for urban use. The reservoir has also been stocked with gamefish, and it's also popular for boating. By the way, if someone says "Your Shihmen Dam has a problem" it is a polite reminder that your fly is open. See more..

    Taoyuan Shrine image
The Taoyuan Shrine is faithfully preserved from the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). Remants of other shrines may have some tori, but the Taoyuan Shrine is a beautifully preserved piece of architecture. Following Retrocession to China, the occupying mainland Chinese destroyed many Shinto shrines, including the main Shrine on the Yuan Shan Mountain in Taipei. This shrine honors Japan's martyrs, who fell defending the Empire. The people of Taoyuan are to be commended for preserving this memorial to times past. See more..

    Houcihu image
Houcihu is a trail in the hills near Daxi. It is a very pleasant walk. You will have a guide. Unfortunately, English is almost entirely lacking. You will probably see some historic sights connected to Chiang Kai-shek. Chinese people call this sort of outing "pa shan" or "mountain climbing," although they are more hills than mountains Anyone of average fitness can handle this outing. See more..
  14. 4.0 Daxi Old Street (278 reviews)
    - Arresting architecture and intereting food
Historic Sites • Scenic Walking Areas
    Daxi Old Street image
Daxi Old Streeet has some stunning old architecture from the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945). It's a narrow street, we could just fit out car down it. The food is the snack-style sreet food that once dominated Taiwan's towns ands cities. Try it, it's good, I've eaten a lot of street food and I'm still round to tell the tale. Daxi is best known for its connection to Taiwan's old president, Chiang Kai-shek, who had a holiday house overlooing the river. Chiang is a controversial figure these days, I hope the proposal to do away with his holiday house is abandoned, it's a very quaint old building, it would be sad to see it go.. See more..

On 25 Nov night, about 8.30pm, I dropped a easycard into a gap beside the seat on a MRT on my way from airport to A17. By 9.30pm, I received a call that the card has been recovered and ready for pick up the next day. The customer service is excellent and I am really grateful for the help I received. 02 TYM employees that stood out to me was Mr Chuang Yen Chih (the driver whom I reported the problem via the intercom) as well as Mr Tu Tan Zhang (the station officer for the night). Both really went out of their way to reassure my family and to get the card returned to us. See more..

    Neighborhoods
    Chungli image
The night before we left Taiwan back to our country, we stayed at Kuva Chateau Hotel, Taoyuan. Not too far from this hotel, there's Jungli night market, 5-10 minutes walk. We didn't expect this market was big. But in fact, it's huge. Hundreds stalls sold many things, from food/snacks, an ice, fruits, clothes, belts, etc. This market at that Sunday night was crowded by local people and tourist. One thing made us impress, we saw small children (8-11 years old) helped their parents, such as cleaning the table after guest finish eating, packing the food and give it to buyer, etc. In Liouhe night market, we saw the elder people who had rheumatism and can't walk smoothly, still diligent to make money by selling things. Really true, Taiwanese people are diligent/hard worker, from young-elder. In Jungli night market, we found special cookie shop who sells egg rolls (Fafa Egg Rolls Shop). When the egg rolls was baked it smelled good and the the taste was delicious. You should try it. See more..
