There are not more than 7000 in the Tsou people group. This place was established about 10 years ago to promote their culture and also provide a means of livelihood. If you are English speaking, a guide will be helpful. We had a lovely time enjoying the local tea and chatting to the friendly staff. Like anything, the more you engage you more you learn. It would have been lovely if we could walk along the tea plantation. Just a beautiful location. If you visit there is an opportunity to drink and purchase the tea planted and also take in the cultural show. We arrived for the 11am show. After the cultural show, you have the option of dining in their local restaurant. My heart warms to a community who is trying to survive. Wishing them every success. See more..
  3. 5.0 Longgong Waterfall (8 reviews)
    - Hiking in the nature with wonderful scenery
    Waterfalls
    Longgong Waterfall image
The waterfalls are in mountains so tourists need to walk around 30 to 40 minutes depending on which entrance you get into. I went there on the weekend and there were not many people. I entered at 29.9 km entrance, walking through tea fields, and came to the hiking trail. There is a parking lot near the entrance so it is fine to go there by motorcycle or car, but the way to the waterfall entrance is very winding and tourists must be very careful. My first glance was tea fields and it was so beautiful. It was November when I went there. The weather was cool without too many mosquitoes (but still recommend to wear long pants and long shirts). The hiking trail was fine, some were well maintained but some were a little disrepair. There are many waterfalls in the mountain but I only saw some of them because the trail to other waterfalls were destroyed by falling stones. If you would like to visit the waterfalls, recommend to arrive there before noon because the hiking trail would be very dark after sunset and also the mountain would be very foggy. Generally, I like the waterfalls because the place is not commercial and scenery on the way to the waterfalls is beautiful. See more..

Alishan National Forest Recreation Area image
The Alishan Mountain Range is one of the five largest mountain ranges in Taiwan. However, “Alishan,” which means “Ali Mountain,” is in fact not a single mountain, but rather refers to the entire mountain range. The area has been home to a rich stock of Taiwan red cypresses and Taiwan yellow cedars since ancient times. From 1912 until the late 1960s this was the site of the largest forestry center in all of Taiwan. The Giant Trees Plank Trail within the recreation area currently has two sections. Walking along the trail, you’ll encounter 36 red cypress giant trees that have survived through the centuries, reminders of the magnificence of these sacred trees. See more..
  5. 4.5 Alishan Forest Railway (304 reviews)

Spent More than 3 hours Rail Services
    Alishan Forest Railway image
The Alishan Forest Railway was built during the peak period of global railway technology. Four major engineering methods were used on this one railway. It has been a national landmark of Taiwan’s cultural landscape, serving as a witness to the historic development of Taiwan's forestry sector over the past 100 years. During the rocking, swaying journey up from Chiayi you’ll see the changes of plant species as you pass through three different forest zones: tropical, warm, and temperate. The various track sections also have their own unique characteristics, such as a spiral section (Dulishan Station), and the horseshoe bend (Shuisheliao Station), making this railway journey a truly rare attraction. Alishan Shenmu Area image
At present, the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area has the second stage of the giant wood group plank road, with the Shenyi Bridge as the demarcation point. The first stage plank road starts from the Chitose cypress, and is constructed by the ecological construction method of the elevated wooden plank road and the point-shaped cement base grounding design. The end point is at the Shenmu site. The plank road is 600 meters long, and there are 3 high wooden bridges along the way. You can admire 20 giant red cypress trees with a diameter of 5 to 12.1 meters and tree heights ranging from 25 to 42 meters. After the completion in November 1998, tourists strolling along the way, can't help but Admire the magnificent scenery of "Big tree is beautiful". In August 1998, in order to connect the giant red cypress trees in the area of the tree spirit tower, the Forestry Bureau erected wooden fences in the sacred woods of the fragrant forest and the Chitose cypress, and built a viewing platfo See more..

    Eryan Ping Trail image
AMAZING. Discovered that this was near my homestay, and was excited to take on this trail. Started at about 7am and reached the peak at about 8am (with many pitstops to take snaps & videos of the sunrise and clear skies). The trail can be slippery after the rain, so do take note of the previous day's weather condition! My homestay owner informed me of the alternative route to the trail - which is to enter through "Chuan Shuo Lu" (传说路) instead of the steep wooden trail beside 53.1 Homestay. I also met a lovely local elderly couple who were waiting for the "Yun Hai" (sea of clouds) at the peak. I did not wait for the phenomenon and totally wished I did. See more..

Rueili Scenic Area Swallow Cliff image
The spot to the area was not visible. We had to ask the locals around and then found out that you just walk through path opposite a school. The path starts with very steep steps and sheltered by a lot of trees. We descended down about 200+ steps when we gave up. Cause after that we realize that there are like another 1300+ steps to go. We decided to go back up the steps. We took about total of 30 mins just to do the 200+ steps. if you are not fit, don't even attempt it. Now I understand why the locals name it the Youth Ridge Trail. I believe the views are beautiful and wish the authorities would build a cable car for others to enjoy. Too bad I didn't get the chance to see it after traveling 1 over hour to get there. See more..

    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Bantou Jiao-Zhi Pottery Village image
Our driver/guide strongly recommended this location to me before we reached Taiwan, and I was not disappointed. We enjoyed walking around this countryside on a nice sunny day. There are bicycles which you can rent for a small fee, but we decided to walk instead. Everywhere you go, there are cute ceramic art pieces - the walls, the chairs, or any random statue. It made me felt like I was walking in a cartoon world. According to our guide, there are many artists living in this quiet village, and these are all works of of theirs. At this pottery studio, Ban Tou Yao (板头窑), kids can select a pottery that they like and color on it at a fee. We had our lunch here and spent about 3 hours in this village. There are a lot of photography opportunities. See more..

  21. 4.5 Zihyun Temple (7 reviews)
    - 山嵐雲霧間 神光幽隱現
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Zihyun Temple image

  23. 4.0 Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum (267 reviews)
    - Really good museum
Spent 2-3 hours Art Museums • History Museums
Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum image
My wife and I spent 4 hours at this museum, which is a very worthwhile experience for those who appreciate Chinese art and happen to be traveling in south central Taiwan. The building is really interesting architecturally and sits in a nice park setting out in the suburbs. I liked the way the various rooms were set up around themes in Chinese art, and the English signage was good. Using an English audio guide is useful although it doesn't contain as much information about the pieces as the Chinese audio guide. Nonetheless, what's displayed is really good and currently there are more paintings displayed than in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. This museum doesn't receive that many visitors, so you can really enjoy the artwork without mobs of people. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant has pretty good jiao zi, but looks to specialize in hot pot. All in all, a wonderful visit. See more..
