This is a Hakka village settlement with a history of over 200 years. The buildings were established by Lin's family from Chaozhou, Canton (廣東潮州) in 18th century. The architectural styles include mud brick, red brick, wooden and concrete houses, reflecting the evolution of the settlement's integration of old and new over the past 200+ years. Together with the restoration of the adjacent paddy field landscape, it has become the first "Hakka Cultural Conservation Zone" in Taiwan. Heard about this village for a long time. Plan to come but never took place. Tried to book a room and spent several days to finally booked a room (actually, it’s a cottage, great!). You can sense the positive energy once you entered the gate. Raining at night which ruined the Sakura blossoms but it created the foggy, misty and mysterious Views of mountain and valleys. Definitely a good to spend a night here to fully explore all the natural beauties. The meals at the restaurant are also quite good. Went to Nanpu to have a reunion lunch at Mike Recreation Farm. The foods were ok but the environment and reunion atmosphere pretty much dictated the whole event to. Make it very joyful. The main purpose was due to the recent election in which one of our schoolmates was too much involved and heart broken because his Green Party got beaten quite badly. It is a complex of workshops and coffee house. The entrance costs NT$ 50, but you can use this ticket as a discount coupon inside. So, I took a cup of coffee, but unlike this kind of touristic facilities, the price was quite reasonable. This is a great place to visit. As a Beipu native, I did not know the cold spring when I was little. However, I went with my mom to enjoy the cold spring treatment several years ago. Ten some years ago, my mom was not able to walk at all (due to aging), my brother carried her to the cold spring to dip into the spring water for the treatment. Believe or not, a month or two later, my mom regained her walking capability. I plan to take her for more cold spring treatment this coming summer. See more..

The "the One" is a former estate of a Taiwan billionaire that is open since he deceased. It is a bit disappointing to hear that the whole thing was built in the 80s. But unlike many other billionaires who have the money to build anything they like and therefore have something outrageous built, this man ordered his architects to follow ancient Chinese construction styles and collect everything that is fine and perfect from classical Chinese achitecture. In fact, as our guide explained many parts of the building are based on ancient paintings or literary works. I am not sure if mixing all in is tasteful by Chinese standards, but for the outsider it resulted in a living guidebook of Chinese architecture that is, at the same time, a romantic garden where one can surely pass a few nice hours away from the busy capital. Learned about thus place since I was a teenager at Hsinchu senior high. However, have not visited here. Finally, driving around during Chinese New Year holiday and arrived. It was not opened but still had a "mission accomplished " feeling. The scene is gorgeous. In a way, Zhang should be grateful to stay here to enjoy the view, being with his lover and somewhat have all the time to think to meditate. This may be better off for him. See more..

I have visited this place twice as I have a personal connection - my wife's ancestors lived here. The L-shaped route provides some very interesting examples of early Taiwanese architecture in rural Hakka territory. There are few shops or amenities and it can be walked in half an hour. the local are friendly. For a real authentic taste of Taiwanese Hakka food I would recommend a stop at the Hwai Jyou Jyan Tin - Good Old Days restaurant near the west end of the route. The ambience is truly unique and the family owner staff of 3 generation running/renting the place are very friendly given a chance. You will need someone in your company to help translate Mandarin or, better yet, Hakka dialect, but it will be worth it if you want an authentic local experience. You need a car or taxi from the local train station (Hukou) about an hour's ride from Taipei. If you are cycling the island I think you can readily get there too. See more..

This theater was built when the Japanese occupied Taiwan and is well-preserved. It has lots of movie memorabilia – a must visit. It is actually a restaurant now where you can taste authentic Hakka cooking while viewing old movies with English and I guess Chinese subtitles. The old Dong-An bridge was built in 1933, during the Japanese colonial era. It was designed by Japanese architect, and was implemented by local workers leaded by the well-known mason Lee Jen (李鎮). In 2003, because of the increasingly busy traffic, a new bridge was built next to the old one at its southern side. The new bridge copies the old, while adopts a new construction technique. The twin bridges are both in use now. Together with the nearby Nioulan River Waterfront Park (牛欄河親水公園), the Dong-An Bridges became a popular attraction in Guanxi. We stopped off at this recreational farm as part of the 5 day trip round Taiwan. Our tour guide bought us several plates of tomatoes and cucumbers. The tomatoes were of different colours and types.
