There were six original Mazus statures in Meizhou, Putisn, Fujian Province (福建莆田湄洲), the home town of Mazu. The only one remaining in the world is at Lukang. So, it is extremely precious. The original Mazu stature of Meizhou was brought to Taiwan by General Shi Lang (施琅) in 1683 (康熙22年), and was enshrined in Lukang. The existing building was constructed in 1725 (雍正3年) . Dating back to 1919, it was originally the residence of the rich man Gu's family (辜顯榮). The front building is a magnificent baroque building. On the back right is a century-old traditional Fujian-style building "Ku Feng Building (古風樓)". In 1973, the Gu's family donated the house and established the "Lukang Folk Arts Museum". The museum displays the people's livelihood items from the Qing Dynasty to the early years of the Republic, eg., clothing accessories, opera musical instruments, religious etiquette supplies, literature, calligraphy and painting. Diverse and very rich. Worth a visit. It's just that photography is prohibited in the exhibition room, which is too conservative and not in line with the trend. See more..
  8. 4.5 Xilou Bridge (20 reviews)
    - The Xiluo Bridge
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
    Xilou Bridge image
The bridge is the most well-known landmark of Xiluo in Taiwan. In former days, Xiluo was a major hub of Zhuo Shui River for transportation and the bridge was essential. The construction started in 1937 when Taiwan was still a Japanese colony but when Japan took part of WWII in 1941, the government focus on their war effort and the construction was eventually suspended. Postwar, the construction started again and was finished in 1952. When it was completed, it was the longest bridge in the Far East and second to the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco. If you go visit the bridge on the late afternoon, you will also be able to see some kites flying and a market where you can enjoy coffee and other specialties. See more..

    Jhongsing Rice Castle image
See more..

  16. 4.0 Nine-Curve Lane (67 reviews)
    - An ancient Traditional Lane in Taiwan
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Nine-Curve Lane image
This is a well kept traditional lane in Taiwan back then. We are lucky to come over here right after a heavy raining. Thus we pretty much enjoy all scenes by ourselves only and breathing fresh air after the raining. As the name stating, the lane is quite curvature and interesting. The purpose of the curvature is anti-theft and minimizing chilly wind blowing from ocean. However, there are a lot of abandoned (nobody live in there) houses in the lane. It may be resulting from the lane is a bit too narrow to have some small touring business. It’s a must visit spot in Lugang for local culture and architecture. See more..

  23. 4.0 BaGua Mountain Trail (25 reviews)
    - Skywalk
    Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails
    BaGua Mountain Trail image
I discovered this unique mountain trail while visiting nearby Baguashan Buddha. This is the longest skywalk Trail in Taiwan. The mountain area contains numerous indigenous trees which are described on information plaques along the trail. I passed a baseball park, school, a former military encampment, a military cemetery, parks and ended up at a local museum/community center. The views from atop the skywalk trail overlooking Changhua City and beyond are incredible. The trail isn’t long (under one mile), but I took my time, taking in the surroundings and spent a good 45 minutes walking. Evening is a nice time to visit - cooler temperatures and beautiful sunsets. Revisited here to thank Mazu protecting us as what we prayed for last year. Believe or not, we totally mistaken thought this is the other Temple which is more we’ll known. We drove there and shockingly found out it’s totally different. This temple is located in the Old Street and was built by Chanlong Emperor. Actually, we like this better because it’s not that business atmosphere. We worshiped and will be back next year again! See more..

    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Lukang Ancient House of Ding's Family image
Tucked away in a nondescript building along one of Lukang’s busy shopping streets is the restored home of one of the area’s notable residents. The house boasts numerous rooms and courtyards. Inside many of the rooms are items that belong to the family - not museum quality, but fascinating to see as it brought an authenticity to the house. There is a caretaker/guide on site who did his best to point out certain items of importance as well as unique styles of craftsmanship. Admission is free. I spent about 30 minutes here. An interesting look into the past. See more..
