-Excellent Ultimate Taipei Layover Tour!

My wife and I had a wonderful time with Chia-chien Jessica on our Ultimate Taipei Layover Tour recently. We had a 10 hour layover between connecting flights and prearranged this Ulitmate Layover City Tour days before arriving at the airport. We were picked up and dropped at the airport by Chia-chien Jessica before and after our tour with her which was great! She spent a few hours with us, visiting a number of popular sites and attractions in the city. She was very pleasant and extremely knowledgeable on all the places we visited on the tour. I would definitely recommend Withlocals for a personalized private city tour and more when visiting Taipei. For more detailed information and photos, be sure to visit my travel blog! See more..

- 4.0 Chiufen (Jiufen Old Street) (5.603 reviews)
-Easy to get lost
Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Historic Walking Areas • Flea & Street Markets
There are a lot of ups and downs in this mostly covered street. You will certainly get fit. There are few directions and without a map, the best idea is to retrace your steps when you reach the other end. I went early on a Saturday morning, before the big crowds had arrived. It might be good to do a bus tour, although I did fine with a train to Ruifen and a local bus from there. There are a few bus routes that make the journey. An Easycard makes for touch on/off on both train and local bus. Many touristy shops for knick knacks and food items. I stopped for a good vegetarian lunch at the Shan Hai Guan Teahouse at 150 Jishan Street. See more..

- 4.0 Tamshui Old Street (1.042 reviews)
-Great Shopping in Tamsui
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Tamsui is a district at the top of Taiwan Island in Taipei. Tamsui was named after the river that runs through it. There is a lot of history here, of aboriginal peoples, of Portugese, Chinese, Japanese. In 1997, the red metro line reached Tamsui and tourism increased dramatically. It is a beautiful area, very mountainous and green. My friends and I walked through the famous, old shopping street parallel to the wharf, which by itself, is also fabulous for shopping. Lots of baking, Taiwanese foods offered, souvenirs, clothing, anything and everything it seemed. We stopped for soft ice cream cones in green tea flavour. Tamsui is easy to get to as it is the last metro stop by same name, north on the island. It is a very vibrant district of Taipei. See more..
- 4.0 Ping Hsi Branch Railway Line (963 reviews)
-Stop only at Shifen
Spent More than 3 hours Scenic Railroads
You can travel to this place by buying a TRA train ticket at NT49.00 each at the Taipei TRA main station. The train will travel to Ruifang station about one hour ride. At Ruifang station you either buy a one way ticket at NT27.00 or NT64.00 for two way. This two way ticket allow you to stop n hop on any train that stop along the few station within the day. BUT ONE THING YOU MUST REMEMBER IS THAT THE TRAIN ONLY COME EVERY ONE HOUR. So if you stop at the end of the line at JINTONG station, you need to wait for an hour for the next train. My advice is no point as there is not much thing to view at those few small station. Better to stop only at SHIFEN and you can spend a few hours here. Release sky lantern, many food shops to choose, take picture at the JinAn bridge or walk to the waterfall about one km distance. From Shifen you can either take a public bus 795 to MUZHA MRT station or take the TRA train back to Taipei city. See more..

- 4.0 Cat Village Houtong (578 reviews)
-cat lovers must go!
Friday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
We took our son there and he loved it, but note that the cats aren't super friendly because they are after all not pet dogs but cats that don't really belong to an owner. There are more tourists than cats so unless you have something to feed them it would be hard to pet them. The area is really nice, there's a view spot if you go up a bit behind the train station. - 4.0 Wulai (535 reviews)
-Amazing day trip
Historic Sites • Neighborhoods
I caught the 849 bus to Wulai, which took around 2 hours. The scenery on the route is very special, as you leave the city behind and enter a mountainous landscape. Wulai itself is a very beautiful area, loaded with history and culture. I loved just walking around the village and learning about the indigenous community. The atmosphere was very relaxed, and of course the waterfall is breathtaking. If you want a break from the city, then you should definitely invest the time to go and see Wulai. See more..

The Yingge area has a long history of ceramics production. Pottery is still made in the area. Take a walk along the street, you are under no pressue to buy. Some of the ceramics are outstanding, some are a little tacky. You're almost sure to find something that interests you. We visited Pingxi District a week ago. It was a 45 minute ride from Taipei. We walked to go down to the Shifen waterfall site. The path was clean, safe and quite a walk to the waterfall. It was raining so I suggest that you bring an umbrella or check out the weather forecast before you go. It wasn't that cold because you sweat while walking. It's worth the walk See more..
- 4.0 Sanxia Old Street (327 reviews)
-Top tips for visiting Sanxia Old Street
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
Tip 1: First of all, if you are a foodie kind of tourist then this is a good place to visit. The whole street is all about local taiwanese food and delight. Let's just put it this way, Taiwan is all about eating! Tip 2: The street itself is really tiny and filled with people, if you are not that kind of people who likes crowded area then highly avoid it. Tip 3: This is a huge place but you sure will have a good time looking for a public toilet. Tip 4: I personally feel that this is a very touristy area and there are many other places in Taiwan that are pretty similar to Sanxia old street. If you want to give it a miss, its completely fine. Tip 5: The one good thing about this place is the food is cheap so if you are hungry, grab something here before you head back to town. - 4.0 Fort San Domingo (318 reviews)
-A travel in history
Friday: 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
Fort San Domingo, located on the hilltop overlooking Tamsui River estuary, was established by the Spanish in 1628. It was torn down by the Spanish before they were expelled from Tamsui by the Dutch in 1642. The Dutch then built Fort Antonio near the ruins of Fort San Domingo. Since the local inhabitants in Tamsui at the time referred to the Dutch as "red hair savages," the fort was nicknamed "Hong Mao Chen," meaning the "Red Hair Fortress." In reference to the early Spanish occupation, we now use the original Spanish name Fort San Domingo to represent the historic site, although the actual castle we see today is the Dutch fortress Fort Antonio. Fort Antonio is a two story cube-shaped building, measuring 15.25 meters on all four sides while standing 13 meters tall. The deep foundation, thick walls, and mix of stones and bricks provide the fort with strong and effective fortification. Following the Opium War, the British government leased the fort from the Qing government for their consulate. Modifications were made accordingly for consular business. To accommodate the needs of the consul's family, the consular residence was then built on the eastern side of the fort. This Victorian building was constructed with red bricks and features verandas as well as a four-sided steep roof, providing a warm and delicate atmosphere. The fusion and influence of Dutch and British architecture has painted the "Green Hill" and surroundings with a unique balanced quality. See more..
- 4.0 Wulai Falls (287 reviews)
-Nice walk under cool weather
Waterfalls
Take a direct bus from Xindian MRT station and it will bring you directly to the Wulai bus terminal, where you can spend the whole day strolling under the cool weather. You can sip coffee at the cafe overlooking the waterfall before proceeding to take the cable up to the so called amusement park where there are restaurants and coffee house to enjoy the scenery while listening to the live performance. Do remember to use the discount voucher included in your cable car ticket when buying drinks at the cafe. It's about 45 minutes walk up to the peak and you can roll a boat, have lunch and enjoy some music. A highly recommended place to visit. See more..
- 4.0 Queen's Head (255 reviews)
-Very regal - be seen with the queen
Parks
The queen’s head is cool but not more amazing than the other incredible natural structures in this awe-inspiring place. It’s fun to decide what each formation looks like for yourself. Over time the neck will erode, become slimmer and eventually be unable to support the head. So if you want to see it, don’t take too long. Maybe they’ll need to find a ‘king’ one now? See more..
- 4.0 Golden Waterfall (246 reviews)
-Nice photo stop
Waterfalls
It's not the largest waterfall in Taiwan but the color of the rocks/dirt gives it uniqueness. There is an old gold mine up the mountain that is now a museum worth a short visit. What's also very interesting as you're driving up or down the mountain, you can see the small creek running down to the ocean. It has a very golden/reddish color more pronounced than the waterfall.
