Visit to dam is a scenic out
If you visit a friend in Taipei, a trip to the Shihmen Reservoir is almost obligatory. Some 2 million tourists visit this scenic area every year. "Shihmen" means "rock gate." The dam is one of the largest in Taiwan. The dam began construction in 1955 and topped out 1964. It's used for flood mitigation, irrigation and drinking water. As the population of Taoyuan and Taipei has grown, more water has been diverted for urban use. The reservoir has also been stocked with gamefish, and it's also popular for boating. By the way, if someone says "Your Shihmen Dam has a problem" it is a polite reminder that your fly is open.

Favorite day out for Taipei people
Taipei people love a trip to Shihmen Reservoir. Shihmen means "Stone Gate." The Reservoir is one of the largest dams in Taiwan. Your hosts may take you for a trip to the dam, please take an interest in the dam, your host are probably proud of it.

Interesting day out
The Shihmen Reservoir is a favourite day out for Taipei people. The reservoir is one of the main sources of water for Taipei City. It is a picturesque scene, and the dam is a commendable piece of civil engineering. The effect is somewhat spoilt by the tacky souvenir shops, but that's Taiwan. If you have a friend with a car, they may take you on a trip the Shihmen Reservoir.
