Things to do & places to visit in Lanzarote, Spain

Lanzarote cover image
Ahhh, Lanzarote: The Canary Island paradise where you can ride a camel into the sunset and then dine inside a candlelit cave. The rock formations of Los Hervideros will take your breath away, as will the views from the Mirador del Rio lookout point. Legend has it that locals would hide from pirates in the underground caverns of Cueva de los Verdes, which are now open to curious visitors. Above ground the Jardin de Cactus will teach you all about the spiny desert plants.

    Cueva de los Verdes image
There aren’t many places that gather as many areas of interest for the cultural and natural heritage of Lanzarote as Cueva de los Verdes, a unique mythological-looking cave, full of legends and extraordinary landscape and beauty. It came about after the eruption of the Volcán de la Corona, and it’s one of the most impressive hidden wonders in the depths of Lanzarote. It was used as a hideout by the locals who needed shelter to protect themselves from invasions and attacks of pirates coming from the north of Africa during the 16th and 17th Centuries. In the 19th Century, it became a must for travellers, experts and European scientists due to the uniqueness of this volcanic territory, named after a family that kept their cattle in the area, the story goes See more..

    Mirador Del Rio image
Located 400 metres high, on the Risco de Famara, the Mirador del Río is one of César Manrique's most representative architectural creations as it shows a series of artistic and architectural details and his eagerness to combine art and nature. It is located near the remains of an ancient military base that dates back to the end of the 19th Century. It is camouflaged on the rock in a way in which only a genius of Manrique's magnitude could conceive. See more..

    - Worth a visit.

    Playa de Papagayo image
Nice beaches split into two with a cafe on the top of the cliffs in the middle. Can get a little busy and beware if it’s been raining as it makes for a very interesting muddy drive as it along at the end of an unmade road. The cost to enter the unmade road was very reasonable. There are a few steps to go down to reach the beach but not really a problem. Overall, an enjoyable visit. See more..
  8. 4.5 Jardin de Cactus (4.488 reviews)
    - Enjoyable visit
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Gardens
    Jardin de Cactus image
Jardín de Cactus was the last intervention work César Manrique performed in Lanzarote. The artist from Lanzarote could see beyond how run down the ancient rofera was. Roferas were the quarries that raids are taken from to create a very particular home for cactaceae flowers from all over he world. Surrounded by the largest cactus plantation of the island, dedicated to crops of cochineal insect, a product of great financial relevance in Lanzarote in the 19th Century. Jardín de Cactus has around 4,500 specimens of 450 different species, of 13 different families of cactus from the five continents. The green shade of the plants stands out against the blue sky and the dark volcano creating a harmonious explosion of colour that impresses visitors. The only sounds that break the peace and quiet that prevails, are singing birds and boozing insects, enjoying their very own oasis. See more..

This is one of this geological things hard to explain but easy to enjoy. The big waves get into caves and break. The foam goes out through holes on the roof ad there we are. Amazing show. - Clean beach, golden sand and safe waters
Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 10:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Beaches
    Playa Dorada Beach image
Monday 10th January and we walked from our Hotel, H10 Timanfaya Palace, along Avenida Maritima, a coastal pathway, in the direction of Rubicon Marina. Along our way we stopped here at this beach, which is very wide with golden sand and it stretches about 300 metres along the coast. It is situated along the Avineda between the Port and Marina Two man-made breakwaters, constructed with rocks, stretch out into the sea from either side of the beach. These create a protected sheltered area with calm waters, an ideal safe swimming area. Rows and rows of yellow sunbeds with blue umbrellas line up along the beach, these are available to hire. There are showers along the beach. When we were here, it was a bit overcast, it was virtually deserted with only a few people walking along the Beach. It was gloriously quiet, perhaps due to the time of year, peak season would be a different story. There are numerous cafes, bars, restaurants and shops close by on the Avineda. See more..

    Famara Beach image
This beach will put a smile on your face. Not the 7km as advertised but less than 4. Nevertheless it is a joy. Surfer schools frequent this place but they just create more things to entertain. The seascape is enormous and so so blue! Many parents with adorable toddlers. Not great for swimming. Caleta de Famara harbour is good for that with small beach or harbour side access. See more..
  13. 4.5 Casa / Museo Cesar Manrique (1.258 reviews)
    - Manrique's last home
Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums
Casa / Museo Cesar Manrique image
For an insight into the personality of César Manrique, who has been of so much importance for Lanzarote, it is very worthwhile to visit the house and studio, where he lived from 1988 till 1992. It is located in the upper part of Haria, one of the three beautiful villages of Lanzarote, besides Teguise and Yaiza. The artist had transformed a farmhouse, set in a palm grove, into his home with attached studio. Open daily as of 10.30am it has an entrance fee of 10 Euros. Photography is not allowed in the interior rooms. Cesar Manrique loved to entertain people, for whom he had a guest room, and he also enjoyed some luxury as can be seen from the round bathtub and the swimming pool with the nearby sun loungers. Everywhere are plants, often succulents so typical for the island. Most furniture and lamps were designed by the artist himself. The large studio with all the easels and paints is said to have been left as it was, when Cesar Manrique died from a car accident in 1992. See more..

  15. 4.5 Playa Grande (1.137 reviews)
    - Great beach
    Spent 1-2 hours Beaches
    Playa Grande image
July 22. Great beach, sand was foot burning hot last few days, recommend taking wet/beach shoes, especially for children, but for everyone. Plenty of sunbeds but seemed to be getting busier, more children arriving? Two beds and a sunbrolley for €10.50 for all day, Brollys get taken at 5pm, we left our towels clipped on while we went up to the restaurants and bars above for lunch. There are men selling drinks and ice creams constantly at usual prices, we met a great man who wore a hat that had a back neck cover, didn’t know his name, he was brilliant, bought us jugs of sangria from the restaurant above with cups, and he offered to bring takeaway foods, he was brilliant. He gave us recommendations for restaurants which we used and they were great. ‘Fantastico’ for lunches and ‘Enjoy’ for evening Chinese/Thai food, both great, good prices. See more..

Gorgeous beach with public toilets, (open from 10am), showers to wash off sandy feet, refreshments sold at very reasonable prices, (great ice creams and coffee,) amazing marine life so great for snorkelling and diving. (We used Scuba Legends to go diving, and we can not recommend them enough.) Parking can be busy, but the shopping centre has a multi-storey car park and is less than a 10 min walk. Lots of great restaurants close by the beach. See more..
  17. 4.5 Playa Flamingo (950 reviews)
    - Must visit
    Spent 1-2 hours Beaches
    Playa Flamingo image
Playa Flamingo is my go to beach when I’m in Lanzarote. It’s very scenic and pretty! It’s safe for swimmers as it’s the sea enclosed, so I didn’t have to worry about my children going too far out, although the sea was deep if you go to the far end of course. There’s always enough space for everyone there, it’s a good size, not too small or not too large. There isn’t much shade there so I would definitely recommend bringing a beach umbrella. The cleanliness of the beach is great, it’s looked after very nicely. The surroundings restaurants and shops are ok. There are a few mini supermarkets which are convenient if you want to get a few things. The restaurants aren’t the best, but they’re ok if you want a quick snack for lunch. See more..

    - Great place for sunset

    El Golfo image
El Golfo is a lovely village on the sea about 20 minutes from Playa Blanca. The village has a few tavernas along the sea front and prices looked reasonable from what we saw. The sunset there was amazing and attracts a lot of people taking photographs. There’s also a few accommodations for people wanting to stay and again prices looked reasonable. Would definitely recommend this place early evening for the sunset. See more..
  21. 4.5 Volcan El Cuervo (536 reviews)
    - Interesting visit & exciting end !
Spent 1-2 hours Hiking Trails • Volcanos
    Volcan El Cuervo image
We stopped here late afternoon as the sun was casting dramatic shadows on the volcanoes. We walked clockwise, which leaves the crater entrance till the end. On entering the crater we spotted a Falcon swooping round a white pigeon. I set my phone on a tripod on video record and moved away. It soon came back for his kill, however each time someone arrived he was scared off. Still very pleased with the short video. I'll attach some still pics. So a great little walk with an exciting end ! See more..

    - Super lunch in lovely location
Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water
El Lago Verde / Charco de los Clicos image
This restaurant is next to the beach/sea and it is towards the end of El Golfo which makes it more private than the main run of restaurants. The views are amazing. Friendly staff and we did not need the menu as we ordered the seafood paella. We were told it would take 25 mns which was fine and ensured it was freshly cooked. It was certainly worth the wait and it was excellent with 2 large helpings. Half a bottle of the tasty dry white Guiguan. Slightly disappointing apple pie to share but overall an excellent lunch. 24. 4.0 Teguise Market (2.087 reviews)
    - Sunday morning market
Wednesday: Spent 1-2 hours Flea & Street Markets
    Teguise Market image
Every week, vendors peddle local crafts and handmade goods in the charming town of Teguise, the former capital of the Canary Island. Here you'll find local artisans and a wide range of items from pottery, baskets and jewelry to local wines and cheeses. Bargaining is expected, so be sure to haggle. There's a celebratory atmosphere at the market with traditional Canarian cuisine, live music and entertainment, but be wary of pickpockets. Visit early and beat the crowds, or stick around until closing to score last-minute steals. Consider a market tour by a local guide which includes round-trip transportation. – Tripadvisor See more..

    Pueblo Marinero image
Nice relaxed area, occasionally with live entertainment in the centre are surrounded by the restaurants. Decent range of places to eat, some reasonably priced souvenir shops, just a chilled area to hang out and eat in after a day out exploring. Keep away from the extension of this part which runs down to the (rather smelly) beach with hotel on the front which is generally more run down and just doesn't have the same vibe. Plenty of free parking in the area makes it easy to access. See more..
