    Church of Saint Nicholas image
Built on the foundations of the previous Romanesque-Gothic church, this Baroque Parish Church was built in 1761 and dedicated to St. Nicholas; the patron Saint of the City of Varaždin. The unique Gothic tower is unusual for inland Croatia as it has the Varaždin coat-arms dating from 1464. Above this is a stone seal; an interesting detail and relic of the former church. Surrounding the tower was a parapet where watchmen would guard against fire in the city. Line of trees surrounding the church marks the former local burial ground in which was in use up to the late XVIII Century. In the niche of the tower is a statue of St. Florian; an image often present throughout Varaždin. See more..

  8. 3.0 Kristal Tuk (3 reviews)
    - Visiting where the beautiful Croatian crystal is cut
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
We have been visiting Croatia since the late 60s. Have fond memories of the beautiful Croatian crystal being sold - and enjoying at home. We have found the supplier of the crystal just outside Zagreb a few years ago. While in Zagreb with friends residing there who knew the Tuk family well from work they had done together, we requested that we go see the facililty. Mrs. Tuk came to collect us from our home (not the normal way you get there but it is very reachable from Zagreb) and gave us a tour. . We were given a tour of the glass cutting area and then visited the gift shop. In the past, I had contacted them by phone or email and ordered. They delivered that way quickly to our door in Dubrovnik. But this was even more special being able to see the facility, being able to talk to the family/crystal cutter and purchase the special glass there. Great to spend a little time to see this cultural rarity (only really in the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia have this skill - even others that you see now have people in these areas creating their crystal). While you are there, be sure to stop in the pretty old town of Samobor in the foothills of the Alps. Very walkable with good shops, sites and restaurants. See more..

    Marusevac Castle image
A lovely castle near the most beautiful town of Varaždin. It has been returned to previous owners some years ago. The castle is not opened for visitations. And you cannot reach anyone from the staff there. Unfortunately the new/old owner has no vision for this castle to be a tourist attraction, obviously. See more..

  16. 3.0 Samoborski Fasnik (1 review)
    - Samobor is very prety, carnival is great for kids
    Cultural Events
Streets of very pretty Samobor town get very very packed at Fasnik. The main stage is set on the main square - and lots of local musicians are entertaining the crown in the evening - but unfortunately I did not like the music that much. There is more live music in quite a number of local bars - and some bands there were quite good, and atmosphere was very friendly. During the day there is a fancy-dress competition for children - and all the kids seem to be really enjoying that. All it all, I was glad to have seen it as it is good for people watching - but I'm not sure I would go again. But Samobor is a very handsome little town, and there are some nice walks in the area - so it is worth going for a day - even if you don't stay with the carnival crowds all day. See more..
