A "single chairlift" hauled me up the slope at a leisurely pace. 750 yen (return) was a lot cheaper than most lifts around the world. The dragonflies hitched lifts and kept me company. The crater was clouded over but since it was just 22'C at the top it was 30'C at Zao and 35'C in Yamagata City.

    must see
    Absolutely gorgeous. The weather is very variable and changes quickly - the first day we went (parking at the main parking lot) had a sunny forecast but when we got there the entire mountain top was covered in thick fog and it was pouring rain so we couldn't see it at all. It was also very windy and approaching freezing in October. The next day we hiked over from the Zao Onsen Ropeway and the weather was perfect although still jacket weather. Very glad we made the second attempt because it's fantastic - the unreal color of the lake along with the alien landscape.
