The Three Views of Japan

Matsushima Bay is one of Japan's three most scenic places (Nihon Sankei) and I have to admit that is has earned the designation. The hundreds of islands are best viewed by taking a sightseeing cruise but they can certainly be enjoyed for the shore as you walk along the peaceful town. Matsushima Bay is easily accessed via train just and hour from JR Sendai Station. Take the JR Senseki Line to Matsushima Kaigan Station.

    A guided live-streamed tour
I did a guided live-streamed tour with Yusuke from Heygo. The tour was about 50 mins long and Yusuke is a very good guide. He calmly walked along the local road showing us some remaining vibrant red maple trees. We understand from him that Matsushima is a scenic bay located in Miyagi Prefecture, about 320 km (200 miles) north of Tokyo. There are approximately 260 islands in the bay, and the rias, sawtooth coastlines are complicated and create picturesque seascapes. I also learned from him the meaning of ria coastlines. As a result, Matsushima has been called one of the "Three Scenic Views of Japan" since the olden times, along with Amano-Hashidate in Kyoto and Miyajima in Hiroshima. Along the road, he stopped at a view point but told us there were more to see when he reached the ocean level. Yusuke walked through the narrow sloping path in the thicket and we reached a narrow peninsula. We took many postcards view of the blue ocean, islands with lots of pine trees. These are the views seen on many Japanese postcards. Yusuke walked along the narrow peninsula to give us more great views. He also used mentimeter to ask us two questions and I learned that oyster is one of the specialties of Miyagi. A good tour by an excellent guide.

    Scenic bay
We came here for a visit on ryokan onsen and the view was beautiful Matsushima (松島) is famous for its bay and ranked one of Japan's three most scenic views. The small town about 35 mins from Sendai also known for Zuiganji, one of the Tohoku Region's Zen temples. Definitely a place to stop by sampling oysters which Matsushima are famous for.
