Absolutely charming! The store is a sight to see and offers three stories of books and wonderment. There’s a modest English section on the second floor as well as a few old/antique books on the top floor. I dislike guided tours in general but I was blown away by this one. What a pleasure it was to listen and observe our tour guide Ernest. He was passionate and electric, knowing and curious. Everything you look for in a tour guide! He was able to paint us a visual picture in a really approachable way. Not a single second of the tour was boring. I truly wish all tour guides were like Ernest! The inside of the church is like many other churches and has many historic graves on the floor. As you look around you do see that the church is seeking funding to refurbish the ceiling and parts that showing the age of the church. For a few Euros, you can climb to the top of the red tower and get a great view of the valley and city. Th climb is about 200 steps so plan on the long climb. There is a history room about 1/3 the way up the stairs and a great place to rest. IT is tight squeeze to get by the people coming up and going down...do not bring a backpack on the stairs. This gives the city a very nice ambiance, just like the other gates in Valkenburg. Really cool, for just one euro you can go inside and go all the way to the top (limited view because of the glass and wood). But it is definitely worth it! Very nice! See more..

I had been travelling since the night before, so I stopped in the little restaurant at the train station, and announced to the young lady that my ancestry originated in Valkenburg. Built in 1604, de Grauwe Beer is one of them, today standing on the southern bank of the Maas, near Beesel. I visited it on a beautiful spring day, with the windmill being operational. There were school kids who were learning about the mechanisms. A small cafe was available, where one could enjoy tea, coffee or vlai. The lawn provides a nice spot to sit outside. I cycled my way there, but another option is to take the bus to Beesel town and walk the rest of the way. See more..

The church is smalll but it has long history, back to the end of the 10th century and begin the 11th century up to now. Wij komen vaker bij dit kasteel, een geweldige plek. Achter het kasteel is een erg fraai onderhouden wandelpark, met veel oude bomen. Deze kasteeltuin is gratis en openbaar toegankelijk. In de zomerperiode grazen runderen op verschillende weilanden.
Parkeren kan tegenover het kasteel op ruime en gratis parkeerplaats. Geen laadpunten voor elektrische auto's. Prima bereikbaar met openbaar vervoer, er is een bushalte op 100 meter. See more..

Dit mooie monument herdenkt de crash van militair vliegtuig Lancaster R-5701 van het 97 Squadron, neergestort op deze plek op 5 oktober 1942.
Het monument bestaat uit drie verschillende sculpturen. Het voorste beeld waar een vliegtuigpropeller tegenaan staat is voorzien van de namen van de omgekomen militairen die aan boord waren.
Jammer van de hondenpoep, het hele grasveld ligt vol.

Het stadje Thorn heeft een uitzonderlijke en rijke geschiedenis. Dat realiseer je je wel als je door het historische centrum loopt. De Abdij van Thorn werd gesticht in 975. In de 13e eeuw veranderde het klooster geleidelijk in een wereldlijk Stift voor hoogadelijke vrouwen. Deze vrouwen, een gemeenschap vormend van ten hoogste 20 personen, werden stiftdames, kanunnikessen of "joffers" genoemd. Zij leefden wel volgens kerkelijke regels, maar legden geen kloostergelofte af. De "joffers" woonden niet in één gemeenschappelijk gebouw, maar verspreid over het stadje Thorn. Van de 13e eeuw tot einde 18e eeuw had Thorn de status van autonoom vorstendom van het Heilige Roomse Rijk, bestuurd door abdis (ook wel: dekanes) van het Stift. In Thorn vinden we nog diverse voornaam ogende panden waar stifsdames (en hun personeel) woonden. Een mooi voorbeeld is het Huis Salm-Salm, vernoemt naar de prinses Gabriëlla zu Salm-Salm (1720-1794), die op 14-jarige leeftijd "joffer" werd en enige tijd dekanes/vorstin van het Stift was. Zij bewoonde van 1790-1794 dit mooie witgepleisterde pand met opvallende klokgevel en mooie hardstenen lijsten om vensters en voordeur. Het pand dateert van 1630 en werd vóór Prinses Salm zonder twijfel bewoond door iemand van aanzien uit het Stift. Het huis diende in de Franse tijd als ambswoning van de Framsgezinde bestuurder en diende in de 19e eeuw als burgemeesterswoning. See more..
