Beautiful Views

Constructed over a 500-year period mainly during the 12th and 17th centuries, the Walls of Dubrovnik are amongst the most extensive and well-preserved fortifications in Europe. Stretching over 6000 feet, the uninterrupted course offers fantastic views of the coastal city. There's little shelter from the sun, so visit during the cooler months or evenings to beat the heat and for fewer crowds. You can purchase tickets from any City Wall entrance, but a Dubrovnik Pass is convenient and offers great value. A guided tour also often includes a walking tour of the Old Town as well. – Tripadvisor

Marvellous elevated views out to sea, over the harbour and across the red tiled city itself.
We took a walk around the city walls of Dubrovnik whilst on a one day stop in the city on a Wednesday in June. Arriving on a cruise ship, we had planned to do this activity as we had previously visited here about three years ago when we covered the city. Docking at the cruise port in Dubrovnik, we caught a service bus to the Pile Gate at the old city. Note that to use these you must pre purchase a ticket in a local kiosk. Our original intention was to buy a one day Dubrovnik pass which gives access to many attractions in the old city as well as free public bus travel for 24 hours, however you do not seem to be able to purchase these in advance (online) nor was there anywhere selling them at the cruise port that we could find. Having arrived at the old city we found a tourist information centre near the Pile Gate and purchased our one day card only to be told that three of the museums covered by the card were closed on Wednesday’s. This was not a great loss to us as the purchase price of the card is the same as the entrance to the city wall, our main reason for going, and anything additional would have been effectively free. We started our city wall walk at the Pile Gate, the walk is configured in a one way anti clockwise direction and involves lots of steps and uphill sections which may be tiring in the heat if you have mobility issues. Also we would recommend taking a bottled drink with you. The walk takes the visitor around the circumference of the old city and gives marvellous elevated views out to sea, over the harbour and across the red tiled city itself and is punctuated by towers in the wall where there is more room to move about. The walk is very photogenic (so take a ‘selfie’ stick) and we thought well worth the entrance fee for the experience. There are occasional refreshment stops available as you make your way around and these look very pleasant to stop at but expect to pay higher than average prices here. We stopped off at a café in one of the towers in the North West corner of the wall and enjoyed a glass of freshly squeezed orange in a very relaxing atmosphere. We found a set of public toilets in the south east corner of the wall should you need one, though the wall cafes have customer facilities as well. The recommend time for walking the walls is about 2 hours but we took time to admire the views, take photographs and have a drink so our trip lasted 3¾ hours, after which went to the harbour area.

Walls of Dubrovnik is a must do to see the Old City and the views from a higher point. I definitely recommend doing the walls later in the day (after 5 pm) as there are less people up there and it is not as hot as earlier in the day. It costs 250HRK to climb the walls if you buy just a ticket from the Walls ticket office. However, instead of just buying this ticket, I suggest buying a Dubrovnik one day pass which also costs 250HRK (they also have 3 day and 5 day passes) and this pass not only allows you to climb the walls, but it also gives you access to most of the museums as well as one free bus ride. My husband and I purchased the one day pass which is also valid for a 24 hour period and we were able to check out everything we wanted to see in the Old City with this pass and we even took a bus ride out to the ferries. I would say to check these day passes out before purchasing tickets into any of the attractions within the Old City.
