The Peristyle of Diocletian's Palace, Dalmatia, Croatia
4.5 (1.735 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #7 in Dalmatia Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Most amazing spot for me...
Yes, as other reviewers have said, Diocletian's Palace is the key attraction in Split. However, while the various museums and attractions around this square require kind of pricey admission tickets, this place can be visited and enjoyed for free. There was something about this spot which marked the place where the emperor's royal area ended and the "normal" city began seemed so well preserved. It was so easy to tune out the rest of the world and the other tourists and just image what it must have been like centuries ago. The cathedral towers to one side and the most amazing ruins are right ahead. I did not elect to have a coffee in the coffee shop that sort of ruins the ambiance a bit but I did spend a bit of time here both day and night when it is lit up stunningly!

The busy centre of the old Split
The tourist mecca of Old split town. This square was be busy in the day and night. A place to have coffee or drink wine and watch the world go by. You will usually find two Romans dressed up who will want some money for posing for photos with them. There is a 3,500 sphinx overlooking the square but do not climb on it or you will be arrested. Owing to its unique beauty and unusual acoustics, Peistyle became the ideal theatre scenery, perfect for opera classics and works of ancient literature, but also the stage where abundant urban life continues. Having your coffee on the steps circling Peristyle is a unique experience, one of the closest touches of a modern man with the ancient heritage. This is why John Paul the II in amazement said " Dear God, how many feet have stepped through here", and this is why citizens of Split think of Peristyle as the centre of Split and the entire world. The stones are shiny from millions steps of feet on them which can make them slippery even when not wet so watch your step and wear good shoes.
