Fine Historical Wine Drinking

Great visit and great history of the winery from the owner who has so much energy for his family story that it really is infectious. The origin of Zinfandel is Croatia as we were told on the trip and the one produced here is excellent. We got plenty of wine to try from a Rose to start a Zinfandel and then a Plavic Mali red all produced by the winery. At the winery itself we were treated to Croatian/Dalmatian prosciutto and cheese to accompany the red wines. Great company great wine great food and even got a lift back to Trogir where we were staying. It might seem expensive but they will keep opening bottles of wine as long as you want to keep drinking and anything you don’t drink you can’t take away with you so work that one to your advantage!! Finally they also produce an extra virgin olive oil which we also bought and which was also delicious so treat yourself.

Amazing & Interesting Wine Tasting Experience!
We were picked up in Split as a group of 6 and taken up into the hill to the vinyards. Our driver was a very friendly, knowledgable and courteous guy who obviously loves his job. The 20 minutes passed easily and we learned a lot about the local area and history of the region. Once at the vinyards, we were greeted by Anton, the owner of Putalj Winery. In an amazing location with the orange and pink- hued sunset to the west of where we sat, we first tried the delicious rose wine offered by our host. As the sun dipped into the far side of the vines, we were told about the 1000 year history of Anton’s family business, insights into the history of the Zinfandel grape provenance, and a lot about the local history of the seven castles area. We took advantage of the gorgeous dusk sky to grab some photos amongst the vines before heading off to the production facility at Anton’s house. After a very short drive, we arrived at the beautiful location where the magic happens. We were shown where the harvest is changed from grapes into the delicious wine which we were given. The Plavac Mali was every bit as good as the Zinfandel (better in my humble opinion!) and was drawn from the barrels by Anton which was a very nice touch. Finally we were led to a very intimate and wonderfully decorated tasting room where we sampled Anton’s extra virgin olive oil along with Dalmatian hams, local cheeses and bread. We also continued to sample the superb Putalj wines!! While we sat - eating, drinking & merry, Anton told a bit more about his family history (without spoiling anything he is a VERY interesting guy - you’ll see!) At the end of the evening, we were driven back to our villa, full & content. It’s very easy to see why this tour is so highly ranked. It’s a must do for anyone coming to Split who enjoys a glass of vino.

    Intimate, friendly and generous
The most incredible experience. If you are into wines, this winery tour was by far the best experience you could have. We loved it. It was intimate and Anton and Antonija have deep and vast knowledge when it comes to wines. You can feel their passion as they carefully explain everything to you. The price of the tour is very very reasonable considering you have free flowing wine all evening, amazing local produce is always provided to accompany your tastings and importantly you are getting one on one time with both Anton and Antonija for 4 hours. Plus transport is included. But let's not forget the wines. Anton produces high quality, robust and full of flavour selections, again reflecting his passion. I really can't recommend this tour enough. Thank you Anton for your generosity and opening your doors to us.
