Old Split, Dalmatia, Croatia

4.5 (3.311 reviews) Spent Ranking #8 in Dalmatia Historic Sites

Get lost…

And I mean that in the nicest possible way. A maze of back alleys and small squares the old historic section of Split is a great area just to explore aimlessly and see what you find next, with the safety net that you will eventually come out somewhere where it is easy to get back on the main drag. Full of restaurants, cafes and bars there are plenty of spots to stop and refuel and watch people walk by. Unfortunately the downside is that there are plenty of them as well, especially when there are cruise ships in Split, which sadly is a regular occurrence nowadays. Croatia’s rush to expand its tourism industry is in danger of ruining the prized assets that attract people here in the first place. But you cannot penalise those assets just because of that and Split Old town is definitely a five star attraction. I just hope for your sakes that there are no cruise ships in when you visit so that you can enjoy it.

    Brilliant Guided Tour of Split.
We decided that we should do a walking tour of Split on our first morning to get a real flavour of the place. We did not want to go in a large group so we spoke to a few guides and decided on Zdenko Cvijetic ( tel: +385977119791), an official city guide who grew up in Split. We found him in the Public Square. He was early for our arranged meeting, with just the two of us. . He spoke perfect English and entertained us with great stories and an insight into the history and development of this incredible city. The tour was excellently paced and he showed us fascinating remnants of Split's Roman past and how it developed up until the present day. Highly recommended.

    ATMs everywhere - avoid!
We loved this city with its narrow streets and plethora of hidden bars and restaurants. So much to see and do ... especially in the evening. However, many of the smaller bars, and those opposite the ferry port & marina, only take cash. So make sure you have plenty of currency and avoid the ATMs that charge a heavy commission - which is the majority. There is an ATM on just about every street corner but the best rates are those associated with a bank. Quite hard to find but we discovered these always have "banka" in the title (e.g. otpbanka) and then decline the local conversion as many UK cards offer better rates.
