Mount Srđ, Dalmatia, Croatia

Cable car is very expensive but fun and probably your best option in the heat of the day!

My friend and I opted for different routes for getting up Mount Srd. Both of us agreed that the view from the top was five stars and worth seeing. My friend took the very expensive cable car (160 kn for a return) and said whilst it was a fun experience it was 3.5 minutes either way so price per minute is pretty extortionate! That said, he was happy with his decision and would do it again. I decided to walk up from the Old Town, which was a harder walk than I’d anticipated and very warm (I set off at 2.30pm). It took about 40 mins in total. It started with going up the city steps then across two dual carriageways before the proper walking trail started. I’d recommend wearing trainers or walking boots as the path is quite uneven under foot. I decided to get the cable car back down so we could fit in other sights so hadn’t saved much money from my adventure but enjoyed the sense of achievement!

Hiking up the trail and hiking back down on the other side
There is a hiking trail that starts at the highest road above the old town. We’ve heard it’s hard to find, but we didn’t think so. The problem is that this road does not have a sidewalk, though. It’s possible to walk at the very edge by foot but it’s not pleasant. Also mind that if you start from the old town going by foot, you’ll have gone up a significant amount of the mountain before you even arrive at the beginning of the trail - so the hiking trail itself might ‘only’ take 50 minutes, but you might already be a little out of breath when you arrive at the beginning. (You could definitely take an Uber to the start of the trail.) The hike itself is actually fine, just make sure to bring a lot of water and come either very early or later in the day. You won’t have any shade for most of it. On top, there is a restaurant at which we had something to drink - it’s very expensive, though (an ice tea is 50kn, almost 7€). We really needed to sit down and have a cold drink after the hike, so keep that in mind if you want to go, since there is only this one restaurant up there and no other comfortable places to sit down in the shade. We hiked back down on the other side. To do that, you just walk along the road to a little town called Bosanka, from there, there’s a trail back down towards the old town. You’ll get great views of the old town from the other direction. I think this is much nicer than walking back down the same way.

Dont miss the archive footage in the museum
Fantastic views out over the city and surrounding countryside. I would highly recommend giving yourself at least an hour to go to the museum and watching the archive footage of the effects of the Homeland war on the city and people of Dubrovnik. A do not miss spot on your Dubrovnik visit
