Lokrum Island, Dalmatia, Croatia

Great for a break away from the city
Lokrum Island, home to a botanical garden, salt lake, and Benedictine monastery dating back at least to 1023, is a great escape from the bustle of Dubrovnik. Travelers and locals alike visit this island for its idyllic walking paths, natural swimming pools, and colorful peacocks. It’s also popular among Game of Thrones fans as the filming location for Qarth. A perfect day trip, boats regularly leave from Dubrovnik's Old Town port and take just 15 minutes to get to Lokrum. An additional entrance fee is required on the island. Lokrum is busiest in the summer vacation months of July and August. – Tripadvisor

Peaceful half day
Lokrum is well worth a visit if you've got 3 or 4 days in Dubrovnik. It costs 200 kuna, which seems expensive but you can get 20% off with the Dubrovnik Pass. We caught the 9.00 ferry from the old harbour, to avoid the crowds. I downloaded a map of the island so we could work out where we wanted to go before getting there. There are some botanical gardens, a monastery, a museum, a Game of Thrones iron throne, a fort with a great view, and a few places to swim. There are places to buy food and drink but it is expensive, so we took a picnic from a local bakery in Dubrovnik. We caught the 14.30 ferry back to the mainland. We could have stayed longer just sunbathing and swimming.

Peaceful half day trip
Visiting in late September using one of the boats from the old harbour ( we bought the tickets from the official ticket office in the harbour next to the water as we had a Dubrovnik Pass and that gave us a 20% discount). Large boat takes about 30 minutes to reach Lokrum on a very flat calm sea. Quiet on the island, plenty of places to sit and relax in thecsun or shade, rocky swimming areas ( not easy to get down to - need swimming shoes). Many peacocks wandering around the island! The old monastery ruins were interesting. We found about 3 hours on the island was enough for us. We stayed in a hotel on the Lapad Peninsular and the walks and swimming here was far better and more beautiful but if you're staying in the central old Dubrovnik then Lokrum is a good trip and easy to get to. We stopped at the main cafe on the path back towards the boat jetty - prices were reasonable (and in keeping with overall expensive prices across all of Dubrovnik in our experience)
