    Napfenyfurdo Aquapolis image
Really great indoor waterpark. We had just come from the famous indoor waterslide and thermal baths at Erding Munich, and this was so much better. No queues, and the Anaconda Kamikaze was the craziest waterside I've ever been on - and that includes waterslides with free falls and 360 loops. So worth it if you are in Hungary in winter. Hotel Forras was a great hotel too, and Szeged was beautiful See more..

The square with exactly the same area as the Saint Mark Square in Venice (12,000 m2), bordered by elegant, northern European style buildings, was designed by Béla Rerrich and built between 1928 and 1930. On the eastern and southern side there are university institutes, while the western side is lined by the buildings of the bishop’s palace and the college of theology. The National Pantheon, placed under the arcades, includes over a hundred statues representing the prominent characters of Hungarian history, sciences and arts. The Open Air Festival was first held in front of the Votive Church in 1931. In the past decades after the first, religious themed performance, an abundance of theatrical shows have been amusing the audience in the largest “star-roof theatre” in the country. See more..

    Votive Church image
Very nice paintings, within a great church. It is free to visit when open, but you might happen to "run into" some event when it might be not possible (or limited). When there, I highly recommend to go into the visitor center (which has entrance fees), but there you'll get access to get to the tower, visit the cellar floor with an exhibition and some chapelles, and get to know the history of not only the church, but the great flood of Szeged. If you ever drop by Kecskemét, make sure to bring your zoom-lens camera with you to view this magnificence building. Although there is so much fine detail to be seen and appreciated, even from afar, you need to be as close as possible to this building to really see the ornate features of the rooftop, top walls, the bells and so on. The are other, equally magnificent, buildings to be seen in the town square as well as weird and wonderful sculptures. The Centrum Fagylatt ice cream parlour is also a must see, must taste! Botanical Garden of the University of Szeged image
Not in the city center, but accessible with car (plenty of parking spots at the entrance) and by public transport as well, this became one of the "must visit" of Szeged. Very well kept, well organised, plenty of maps along the road (but you get one at the entrance too) with lots of different type of plants and trees. We find especially nice the lotus garden, tha japanese garden, the rose garden and the tropcial greenhouse. Once there, do not forget to visit the tropcial butterflies building, which is behind the tropcial plants building (get around the tropical building, before the lotus lake and you'll be there). There you will get the experience of being surrounded with the many different, colorful butterfly. See more..
  19. 4.5 REÖK - Regional Art Centre (63 reviews)
    - Beautiful to look at, but with a tour guide you get a better history of the building.
    Speciality Museums
REÖK - Regional Art Centre image
Reok Palace is the masterpiece of Ede Magyar. The palace was once a mansion for a wealthy water engineer (Istvan Reok) whereby Ede Magyar designed the palace around a water theme. The grand palace had a staircase made out of wrought iron with golden flowers, which is what the whole tour seems to be about these days. However, if you actually take a tour with a tour guide from the official tourist board you get a much better idea of its history and the subtle designs embedded within its brickwork. See more..
  20. 4.5 Széchenyi Square (46 reviews)
    - Beautiful
    Parks • Gardens
    Széchenyi Square image
The western walls of the castle built on the bank of the River Tisza in the 13th century were situated in the present Széchenyi Square, while the barren field in front of them served as a main market square and as a practice area for the soldiers defending the castle.Following the Turkish occupation, when Szeged regained its former rights and rank of a free royal city, the City Hall, the administrative centre was built here too.The 19th century reshaped the square both in appearance and function:on the southern side majestic palces were built, then during the reconstruction following the Great Flood of 1879,the castle walls were pulled down.In place of them, ,eclectic style residential and public buildings were erected and parks were created. The square, covering more than 50000m2,is lined by ancient plane trees, magnolia flowers, empress trees and many other unique plants.Among them nicely made statues make us remember some of the influential figures in the history of the city, country. 24. 4.5 Assumption Cathedral (35 reviews)
    - Stunning cathedral
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Assumption Cathedral image
We visited this stunning cathedral during our Viking river cruise. A visit to Kalocsa was one of the tours we embarked upon and what a stunning structure it turned out to be. It is impressive both externally as well internally. The interior has been formed in the Italian Baroque style with lots of gold features. During our visit, we were treated to an organ recital which made the cathedral even more atmospheric. It has, apparently, been rebuilt several times and adjacent to the right-hand side some archaeological excavations were being undertaken to expose the original foundations. This Archbishops Palace across the square is similarly imposing with its yellow walls. See more..

  28. 4.5 Klauzal Square (25 reviews)
    - Heart of the city
Spent < 1 hour Scenic Walking Areas
    Klauzal Square image
The value preserving reconstruction of Kárász Street and Klauzál Square was granted with the Europe Nostra Award in 2004. The downtown palaces display the features of the different competing styles of the time, classicism, eclecticism and Art Nouveau. Their versatile, distinctive nature still creates a uniquely harmonic, well-balanced picture. While having a coffee, a cake or an ice-cream, we can have a look at the full-sized bronze statue of Lajos Kossuth, who made his last speech in Hungary from the balcony of the Kárász House, located on the other side of the square. On the eastern side of the square the harmonic building of the former Hotel Europe can be found as well as the New Zsótér House, which was built on the outer piles of the old castle, and where the operations of the reconstruction were directed from. 29. 4.5 City Hall (24 reviews)
    - Gem on the Széchenyi Square
Friday: 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Architectural Buildings • Civic Centres • Government Buildings
    City Hall image
The present City Hall is the 3rd building in the same place with the same function. The 1st building of a modest design was erected in 1728.It was followed by the second one with the same area as the present hall, designed by István Vedres at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. After the flood devastating almost the entire city(1879),the square was filled up,so the building became too low and awkward.Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos designed another floor and a slender central tower on the original foundation. The neo-baroque City Hall was inaugurated by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1883,the middle window of the staircase is decorated with his renowned saying:"Szeged will be more beautiful than it used to be".The phoenix in the middle of the pediment symbolizes the revival os Szeged. The Bridge of Sighs, originally built for the Emperor and his escort visiting the reconstructed city.In the court with a unique atmosphere theatrical and musical performances await the audience each summer.
