    Lazaro Niebla Gallery image
We were on a Road Scholar trip of Cuba and were taken to see the amazing wood sculptures of a local artist in Trinidad. Lazaro Niebla's work blew me away. He takes photos of local farmers and neighbors and sculpts their image into old wooden doors. He explained he was in art school in Trinidad during the 90's when the USSR collapse sent Cuba into very difficult financial times. There were no art supplies so Lazaro continued his art by using old doors from crumbling houses as his canvas. The result is stunning! A must see if you're going to Trinidad, which is colorful cobblestone town with beautiful colonial architecture. See more..

  5. 4.5 Plaza Mayor (2.919 reviews)
    - UNESCO World Heritage
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Plaza Mayor image
The little plaza and the streets around the square are a little gem and a must to visit in Cuba. The 16th century houses give a very good impression what the city must have looked like in the slave era. The majestic houses were build by plantation owners whose wealth was extracted from slave labour. The streets are still made with the original cobblestones. The facades could do with a lick of paint, but that makes it a bit more authentic. Have a walk around and have drink in one of the bars See more..
  6. 4.5 Trinidad de Cuba (910 reviews)

    Trinidad de Cuba image
Havana seemed like a time-warp with it's art deco and vintage cars, but this place is probably even more of one. As soon as you arrive you feel transported to the colonial era. Yes, it has countless souvenir shops, but in the original buildings so the look of the town is not spoiled in any way. It's a photographer's delight for sure. Note :- our guide informed us that most souvenirs from Cuba are made in Trinidad so to buy here as things are cheaper, however, I found Havana to have the better selection of quality gifts and am glad I didn't hold off purchasing there. What Trinidad does have though are people selling homemade things from their front porch and you can get some lovely, unique items that help the local people. See more..

We used Sr. Miguel who is local to Trinidad to guide us for this tour (he also runs a Casa Particlares - Hostel Mi Osi if you want somewhere to live in central Trinidad). [email protected] +53 58 071644 and we can highly recommend him. Vegas Grande Waterfall We started 9 am from Trinidad and where back at 4 pm and visited some different hillside places including a stop for local coffee. The really nice part was with the nature trail back and fort to the Vegas Grande Waterfall where you can also have a refrehsing bath. It was partly a rough climb so you need to be somewhat fit. 9. 4.5 Parque el Cubano (398 reviews)
    - Beautiful nature walk

    Parque el Cubano image
It's about $10 to get into the park, but you need a taxi or ride to get from the city. Nice walking trails with interesting scenery and a little ‘cave’ to walk through at the beginning (do bring a flashlight or turn on your phone as it can get slippery and you need to walk where you are walking). The trip down to the waterfall is extremely steep and you need to watch every step you take. Do wear sturdy shoes – no flip-flops. It is difficult – so go slow up and down. At the falls, it is very rocky and slippery. The water was freezing (to me), so I barely got up to my knees, but some people did go swimming. Surprisingly, there is actually a lifeguard on duty. The waterfall is nice – but not exactly spectacular. Lots of horse droppings along the trails, so watch where you walk. There was a small farm at the beginning where we could purchase coffee for $1. The entire trip will take most of the day. See more..

I was glad to have climbed the bell tower. It view was beautiful and breathtaking. This was a former convent, however, currently it is turned into a Museum for the Revolution. Personally, after visiting the Revolution Museum in Havana, I was definitely revolutioned-out, however, climbing to the top of the Bell Tower was exciting, each floor was staged, which provided the best views of the town. Best tour guide ever! His English was outstanding and his passion was delightful. He shared the history unapologetically helping us imagine the experience of the slaves at that time. Interesting how the site had been pilfered of everything usable but great that the government plans to restore it and build a fuller experience for visitors. He was so proud of what they had to share and obviously cared about our enjoyment. Definitely worth a visit. See more..

    Playa Maria Aguilar image
The beach is more natural and not turistic. If you like snorkelling it is place to go. I took a snorkelling tour with a local guide and it was definitely worth of it. There are many live corals, various fish and dunes under the water. Also local people at the bar were nice. Apart from us, there were just few other tourists. You may want to take a repellent with you. Moscitos were unbearable after the short rain. See more..
  16. 4.5 Embalse Hanabanilla (46 reviews)
    - Fresh Water beauty
    Bodies of Water
    Embalse Hanabanilla image
We loved the fresh water reservoir/lake and visiting the waterfall. The hotel is large and seems underused. The food was a la carte (rooms very inexpensive and I think included a breakfast restaurant style) - very reasonably priced. Seems to be popular with bicyclists on their way through and fishermen. Boats are available to take you out and a group can book a tour to the waterfall, and to the restaurant out on the lake - we had nice food there and took the hike to a peak behind the restaurant for a beautiful view. For all the quiet and beauty, I cannot understand why the music must be blasted at the pool. This is heard in the rooms also, making napping impossible. We are mostly vegetarian, but made our way with the fish, eggs and yummy fried plantain and other roots - yucca etc Very quiet - few guests in Feb last year. We did meet some cyclists who had come down from Topes de Collantes (which we also did) See more..

It's about a 25min walk to the radio tower from town. Once there you will be ushered inside by the worker and you can for a small fee look from the top of his hut out across the valley. There's a great view of the mountains, beeches, plantations and streams from here. See more..

    Ancon Beach image
Gorgeous beach. We rented bikes via our casa in Trinidad for €10 a day and cycled along the quieter back road via La Boca. In terms of comparison with beaches on the north coast, the only one we visited on this trip was Cayo Jutias. Both were lovely, but for me Playa Ancon had the edge because a) the water was crystal clear, whereas at Cayo Jutias the powdery sand is so fine that even gentle waves turn the water to milky soup, b) Playa Ancon has lots of shade without mosquitoes, and c) at Playa Ancon the €15 catamaran ride out to the reef for an hour of snorkelling over colourful fish was a brilliant experience. 27. 4.0 Valle de los Ingenios (1.327 reviews)
    - Once again finding out about history well for those who know everything!!!!
Historic Sites • Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Valle de los Ingenios image
Trinidad and the valley de los ingenios cuba, if you have time out to take this tour just do it, amazing photos, walk around share a laugh with the locals, see all the arts and crafts, visit the restaurants although the first restaurant we went to, was already chosen for us and didn't disappoint. The little shopping market, and side streets so full arts and crafts, but the best part of the tour was the history of this town, This was where the main sugar industry started, over 50 mills or more, the indigenous people of Cuba faded out by diseases brought in by foreigners its believed. It was also in the 1780's when slaves was bought and sold from Africa back in the day, since then you will find a very inter cultural mix of cubans, local tour guides will definitely clue you up on this part. Built by a 'sugar baron' the tower affords excellent views of the Ingenios Valley. Walking to the tower you have to negotiate the many sellers. There were also ladies doing crochet work. You need to take care ascending and descending and we only went to the second level which was high enough to get good views. See more..

This place is beautiful historical home. This is an interesting and priceless place to experience the former colonial style of home furnishing. It mostly has works on display from 1830 to 1860, and shows rare objects such as a bed made of bronze and mother of pearl, a French wardrobe from 1852, a desk belonging to Maria Theresa of Austria and a glass display case from Meissen. It is also possible to see fine China porcelain and crystal belonging to some of the richest families from the Romantic period. We were extremely pleasantly surprised by the beauty and richness of the museum. See more..

This is an excellent well preserved building with fantastic interior decoration with lots of archways inside and in it's courtyard. Also if you do not afraid from height, you could step up the watch tower that enable you to see all of surrounding area of the town, rooftops and many more. I do recommend to go up there & look around. See more..
