  3. 4.0 Hanzhong Temple of Marquis (14 reviews)
    - Beautifully preserved temple

    Hanzhong Temple of Marquis image
We visited the temple with an unusual tour group - 10 families with children adopted from HanZhong. It was at our request because we had only recently found out that our daughter's CHinese name was given after the Han Lian, - Lian in the rest of China mean the lotus flower that grows in water- but in this area it means Dry Lotus or Saucer Magnolia, and is the floral symbol of the city of HanZhong. The oldest Han Lian tree in China grows in the WuHou Temple of Marquis Wu. Our guide explained the Marquis' importance in the early history of China. Called Zhuge Liang, he was born into an official family in Yinan County, Shandong Province. He was a famous statesman, ideologist and strategist during the Three Kingdoms Period (220AD -280AD). As the Cheng Xiang (an ancient term for prime minister) of the Kingdom of Shu, he devoted his life to his monarch Liu Bei. He assisted Liu Bei who appointed himself emperor in 221AD. Following Liu Bei's death, he was entrusted with Liu Bei's son, Liu Chan. After Liu Shan succeeded his father, Zhuge Liang was given the title of Wuxiang Hou, one who was given the land of Wuxiang in current Hanzhong. The Temple is the oldest WuHou temple in China. It has been beautifully maintained and restored, with many courtyards and interior rooms. The atmosphere is quiet and serene. The trip from HanZhong city took about an hour through scenic terraced fields with mountains rising up behind. There is a recreation of a historic town immediately adjacent to the Temple that we also visited (has restaurants, bathrooms, and gift shops) but I can't find the name, but it's worth a visit. Xi'an Huo Qubing Mausoleum image
Wudi has been mentioned a number of times in the history of China associated with the Huns in the years around 100 BC. One of his two great generals of the Western Han dynasty, Huo Qubing, was buried here. The place is very peaceful and beautiful, with several small exhibition rooms to learn more about Huo Qubing and his time. If you love the stories of that time, you need to be here and see it, feel it yourself. See more..

  6. 4.0 Yongtia Princess Tomb (12 reviews)
    - Incredible Tang Dynasty frescos
Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Ancient Ruins • Cemeteries
    Yongtia Princess Tomb image
It helps to know the history of Empress/Emperor Wu Zetian (625-705 AD) before seeing the tombs of Princess Yongtai and Princess Zhang Hua. The first-mentioned princess died (was murdered?) at age 17 after childbirth, supposedly for gossiping about Wu Zetian and her "boy toys." After her death, she was buried in an elaborate underground tomb, whose entryway was decorated with elaborate Tang-period frescoes. It is one of the most impressive of the tombs in the area. The tomb is approached by a sloping corridor (not for those with problems walking up or down a 10 degree slope); en route to the sepulchre, Tang pottery vases, figures, Sancai horses, and other items showing life during this dynastic period are found in small niches. Some of the original frescoes have been removed (and replicated) and now are in the National Museum. The replicas are fading and flaking away due to humidity. However, they are marvelous, giving a clear picture of women's hairstyles, costumes, court figures, and activities. The Princess Zhang Hua's tomb close by, is very similar. The approach is longer, but not quite as steep. A tour of these tombs can easily be combined with a visit to Wu Zetian's Mausoleum (Qianling) where she and her spouse, Emperor Gaozong, are buried. We had just arrived at Xi'an airport and this was en route to our hotel in central Xi'an. Well worth a visit. I was on s group tour from UK and we had the bonus of a local guide to walk us through the site. On entering the interior part we fitted the supplied plastic bags onto our shoes and stopped at each excavation where the guide explained what had been uncovered. The human figures were around 18 inches in height and were surrounded by various miniature animal figures. We walked over a glass floor so it was easy to look straight down onto the exhibits. Baoji Yandi Ling(Tomb) image
Quite a nice place place. I get the impression that 50 or 60 years ago this mountaintop tomb was a rural idyll, but today the mountain is surrounded by the city. It is quite a large temple complex, a little dusty in places, and there is a LOT of climbing involved. I think more people would visit if they knew about it, especially given the importance it has to Chinese history. It could also be better taken care of, parts of new buildings have been left unfinished with piles of bricks in some places. Nevertheless, it's an interesting place and I'd recommend it to visitors. See more..

cut straight to the bagua maze once you enter! the shrines and other exhibitions can wait. take your time to walk through the legendary bagua maze "you may enter but you may never exit", the really narrow and cold corridors makes it even more exciting and frustrating when you hit a dead end. remember to switch on your phone's torchlight when you finally find the exit point; its not a place for the clausphobic and the weakhearted. A very quiet place on the hill to the north of Baoji. Planty of beautiful ancient stone carvings, paintings on wall, pottery are displayed. An unique underground terminal building is gorgeous. The underground tunnel to the underground palace has steep slope. Walked on it very carefully. You can't get the museum by public transit. However, it is not expensive to get there by taxi. It is about RMB13 from Hua tong Department Store by taxi. When I got back, I had to walk about 500m to the local road to wait for a taxi. It is close to an ancient temple Jintaiguan. You can visit it as your second stop on your way down to Baoji. See more..

Thursday: 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM Ancient Ruins • Cemeteries
    Zhao Mausoleum image

    Shunling Mausoleum image

Emperor Rui Cemetery of Tang Dynasty image
Alongside with Tailing and Jingling mausoleums nearby Pucheng this trilogy is one of the best to do for visitors who are interested in Tang dynasty's funeral architecture. Very impressive alleys sided by alignments of high carved stones mainly representing guards and horses, pairs of fierce and vivid big lions surrounding the main gates to the mausoleums, infinite straight perspectives from the terraces to the loess plain... Climbing the mounts behind or above mausoleums is an unforgettable experience with breathtaking views from the top. That is a pity to let foreign visitors to Xi'an ignoring such places to focus them on Qin's warriors... Pucheng is at only 1h 1/2 driving from Xi'an and these three locations are easy to find. Jingling is very surprisingly crossed by a circulation road so that horses are suddenly visible aligned at the top of loess berms, amazing... See more..
