This is a fabulous mountain hike for all ages. I took my two children - 7 and 10 years old with me and despite some whining in the end thy loved it. We climbed all the way from the bottom up to the lake where we had a picnic then we took a hike over to the rocks and walked through the caves. Both of these places were a hi-light of the trip as well as the incredible views. Really awesome four/five hour hike in amazing mountains. I totally recommend it to other travelers. See more..

    - Spectacular View!

    Taibaishan National Forest Park image
Taibai Mountain at 3,767 metres above sea level is the highest peak of the Qinling Mountain Range. Located in the Meixian County and at the northern foothills of Baoji City of Shaanxi Province, it is a natural botanical garden and a well-known place of Taoist worship. It offers spectacular views of its surroundings and autumn colours of its numerous flora and fauna, and trees, especially in October. The cable car brings visitors to a level of 3,000 meters before they can trek further up the mountain. If lucky we can experience snow if the it were to rain the day before! See more..
  4. 4.0 Baota shan (27 reviews)
    - Baota Shan & Pagoda
Wednesday: 6:00 AM - 9:30 PM Mountains • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Baota shan image
We visited Baota Shan and chose to climb up the Pagoda. For the climb up, be prepared for the very narrow passageways and stairs that lead 9 storeys up to the top. As the space is very narrow and only one way, be prepared to give way by walking backwards if there are people coming from the other direction. Not recommended for those who are claustrophobic. This is the best place for those for really love in nature. If you travel from XIAN it will take around 2 hours ride by a car. This is located in south part of the Xian. 45 kilometers from downtown of Xian city. Recommended to visit there in the morning. Because there are more steps to climb up if you don't want to take the cable car. They have facilities of cable car , slipping way , hanging cable way and boating facility for come down. Very beautiful mountain Range , spectacular views all along the way. Lovly waterfalls and different types of nature attractions. I recommend to climb up by cable car and descending by walk. Don't worry about food and water , there are more shops all around this place. See more..
  8. 4.5 Qingliang Mountain of Yan'an (10 reviews)
    - Long hard climb if visiting in winter ...
    Wednesday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM Mountains • Caverns & Caves
    Qingliang Mountain of Yan'an image
Visiting in the middle of winter, we found the way up extremely long and difficult. Add in the steep sections and slippery steps iced over in places, making theis site unsuitable for anyot who isn't reasonably fit. Grippy shoes are a must !! The views from the top were great though, and made it all worthwhile. The descent was even harder than the wsy up, as we kept worrying about slipping on an icy patch on the steep steps. Highly recommended to visit, but arrive prepared. See more..

    - Spectacular scenery - but the climb to the top is for the fit.

    Hanzhong Zibai Mountain image
The main attraction is that you take a cable car to nearly the top of a mountain. The views while riding the cable car are spectacular. However once to the top cable car stop, there is quite a hike to the very top. I am obese and found the final climb to be very difficult. Although I did eventually reach the top after several rest breaks. This part of China is rural, mountainous, and unspoiled. I am glad I visited this attraction. See more..
  10. 3.5 Taibai Peak of Qinling Mountains (8 reviews)
    - Good experience but really need training before heading there
    Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Mountains
Taibai Peak of Qinling Mountains image
You'll first have to take a bus up to the mountain. There will be 3-4 stops where u can talk a walk up or walk to the next boarding point before reaching the cable car station. We took the cable car up, walked along the platform from 1 peak to the other peak and headed back due to the weather, snow was piled up to knee height. There's lots of stairs to climb so do not attempt if you've knee injuries. The walk wasn't really tiring but due to the high altitude, you may be very exhausted. so do rest if you need, benches, shelters are provided along the walk. Do prepare winter gears if you wanted to go up, or alternatively, you can rent a coat for about RMB 50. best time to hike up is summer as it might still have some snow at the peak but it won't be as cold. Shanxi Foping National Nature Reserve image
Foping National Nature reserve is a remote area in the qinling mountains. Travelling to the place is not easy for people who are not able to speak chinese. Otherwise if you like to see golden monkeys in their natural habitat it is the best place to do. You can travel from Xi'an by bus , which takes 4-5 hours to Foping city. There the new ecological theme hotel is an excellent recommendation for staying. The hotel can arrange a pickup service for you to the national nature reserve , you even can found a wildlife expert there , who speaks english very well. The drive to main entrance of the reserve is about 30-45 min . Then you have to walk into a beautyful valley to see the monkeys . After one hour hiking you will find a place where rangers have adapted a group of 70 golden monkeys to human apparance by feeding them with corn one time a day. Due to this you are able to get very close to the monkeys and can photograph them in their natural surroundings See more..

East Peak
    Mountains
    Zhaoyang Peak image

    Yuntai Peak image

I have visited Li Ping in midsummer coming from Hanzhong, Shaanxi (the park introduction card says 65km although it's much more, arround 90). Be prepared for a typical chinese style tour, which includes mini bus (after ticket area) driving you close to prepared-enclosed paths where you can walk next to the river until you reach the next bus stop in order to go further. Better not to try to follow your route as there are guards not allowing that. When it comes to the scenery one can say its beautiful with nice river streams (it's not Alps or Rocky Mountains, so do not even think to drink the water there) high cliffs hanging all over your head, small waterfalls and geological remains from the Peculiar period. Locals want to believe that rocks look like dragon scales, that's why they call it "Dragon Mountain" (no connection with the YuLongXueShan in Yunnan) which is ok, although a try to "fake" some rocks shaping them, by adding smaller stones and colored cement parts, into a dragon lying on the ground, is a cute "fail". As mentioned, guards are all around and public toilets as well every 20'-30'. There is also a "Chalet" like restaurant close to the top (for those few not carrying supermarket hand bags with tons of food and water making their mountain walking enjoyable ;) ). One day is enough to visit most of the areas of the scenic spot, although if one wants, can stay there for the night and visit other neighboring spots as well. See more..

    - Ansai on the Loess Plateau

    Yan'an Qiuyan Mountain image
When planning my trip I had told my guide, Linda, from Xi'an that I wanted to see the Loess Plateau. We travelled by train from Xi'an to Yan'an and then took a local bus out to Ansai. I requested that we return by Taxi, as taxi's are not expensive in China and more comfortable. Ansai was Linda's interpretation of the Loess Plateau but it wasn't the agricultural country that I wanted to see. Yet I did find the town interesting, because of the way people in the region have carved cave-like homes out of the thick Loess soil. The inside of these homes is plastered and painted, but there are no supports. The town is prosperous with many high rise buildings under construction. Linda told me that deposits of natural gas have been found west of the town. It was the next day when we took a bus journey over to the Yellow River to see the Hukou Falls that I saw the agricultural, terraced orchards of the Loess Plateau which had attracted me to the region. Anyone interested in soil types, primitive architecture, red fret work and drum dancing would enjoy a visit to this town. See more..

    Fengxiang Ling Mountain image
We rode up the winding mountain road in a "bus" (small van) crowded with visitors and/or pilgrims going to see the temple at the top of the mountain. The scenery is incredibly beautiful, though it was hard to take pictures from a moving vehicle. Upon arrival we maneuvered our way through dozens of vendors selling incense and candles, papers, and other items for enhancing one's spiritual experience. We entered the main gates and climbed successively higher through the temple halls to the main hall at the top of the mountain. The atmosphere was prayerful and calm. After visiting the temple, we climbed the few steps to the giant golden Buddha, which is an impressive sight. This statue shares the mountain top with a weather station, both of which can be seen for miles around. The sky was lovely except for the smoke coming from the nearby power plant, which looks rather nuclear. I enjoyed the opportunity to pray in the temple and, being the only westerner, was happy to provide photo ops for other visitors outside it. See more..
