    Chateau-sur-Mer image
Chateau-sur-Mer is a landmark of High Victorian architecture, furniture, wallpapers, ceramics and stenciling. It was the most palatial residence in Newport from its completion in 1852 until the appearance of the Gilded Age Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s. Chateau-sur-Mer was built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore. Mr. Wetmore died in 1862, leaving the bulk of his fortune to his son, George Peabody Wetmore, who married Edith Keteltas in 1869. During the 1870s, the young couple departed on an extended trip to Europe, leaving architect Richard Morris Hunt to remodel and redecorate the house in the Second Empire French style. As a result, Chateau-sur-Mer displays most of the major design trends of the last half of the 19th century. Several scenes for HBO's hit series "The Gilded Age" were filmed at Chateau-sur-Mer. Linden Place Mansion image
A visit to Linden Place is to experience two centuries of American history in one place. Long before it appeared in the movie The Great Gatsby, this exceptional example of Federal architecture was the dramatic stage for one family’s multi-generational journey from the dark days of the slave trade through the boom times of the Industrial Age. Since 1810, its owners faced reversals of fortune, praise and scandal, disgrace and redemption. Beyond being the seafarers responsible for Bristol’s initial prosperity and later financial decline, they ended up captaining some of the country’s most dynamic industries. Along the way, they hosted presidents, married into a world-famous theatrical family, and collected a wide array of treasures, which are on display. Though it’s unfortunate Linden Place’s walls can’t talk, audio tours during museum hours provide a good account of one of the country’s most beautiful and fascinating house museums. Arrangements can also be made for docent-led tours. See more..

  20. 4.0 Governor Sprague Mansion (12 reviews)
    - Beautiful home
    Historic Sites
One of the most surprising parts of the tour of the Sprague property is the carriage house. It is larger than is appears from the outside and inside the brick building is a collection of transportation methods from the days of the horse and buggy. It was great. The mansion is interesting. Bad thing is that there are no set hours and we were luck to find someone in that day to give us a tour. We were told we usually need an appointment. This is a bad thing because we were only in the area for this one day. They should have set visiting hours. The house is haunted. See more..

  26. Burr's Hill Royal Pokanoket Burial Site (0 review)
    Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites
Burr’s Hill was an ancient Pokanoket royal burial ground containing dozens of grave sites, including those of people who occupied the area in the 1600s. Used as a sand and gravel source for a railroad that was constructed next to the site in 1853, many graves were looted. In 1913, in an effort to protect the remaining 42 graves, librarian and amateur archaeologist Charles Carr exhumed the contents and donated some of them to Brown University and the Heye Museum of the American Indian in New York City. Following the passage of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act in 1990, the Wampanoag Repatriation Confederation (consisting of representatives of the Mashpee Wampanoag Nation, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, and the Assonet Band of the Wampanoag Nation) retrieved the artifacts and reburied them at the site in Burr’s Hill Park in May, 2017.
